New and dissapointed

Im fairly new to this site, and love the work people have done on the Logonstudio XP skins. One thing I dont understand about this site is they reject your skins too easily. I created a couple skins using photos Ive had on my computer forever, both were fully functional, no trademarks anywhere...... yet they were rejected. Kinda lame... think Im going to grab a few skins from this site, delete my account,  then bail this popcorn stand !!

Did you get a reason for the rejection? If not, PM a mod and ask why.

Were the photos your own work? Did the skins meet upload guidelines?

Guidelines

If you're new, then I can understand your emotions. I used to be new. Got rejected a lot at first. The key is to understand why you were rejected and fix it. Bailing "this popcorn stand" is not the thing to do.

You say this site rejects skins too easily. I say one of the things that makes this site great, and the place I call home, is the fact that they don't accept every skin that is offered. Some sites aren't moderated well enough and as a result, get flooded with mediocre work, stolen work, etc.

I'm sure I speak for everyone here in saying we hope you stay and try again. Please don't let an early rejection discourage you. We are all your friends here and would love to know you and see you develop your work here.

If you have a problem understanding why a submission was rejected, pm the appropriate Gallery Moderator and wait for the reply.

WinCustomize is a moderated site.  Images you upload must be of your own creation or have permissions included, otherwise they will be rejected.

Also, check your email 'spam' folder. A detailed reply might have gone there.

I like popcorn and so will you if you stick around and get to know some of the skinners here. We're here to help so if you need it ... yell really loud. Just kidding. Just think ... you'll get to meet Bunk and the Master Blaster and Po and Zubaz and Skinhit and WebGizmos and LadyX among others. We have RnD, short for RedneckDude, he's the DX Master and I could fill up this page but if I do the servers will get twisted. lol

If you are new here you will be rejected by the  "Old Boys Mutual Admiration Society" I have been a user since 2001 and been reading and sometimes participating in the forums. I have seen good items rejected for any number of reasons. All submissions of copied work of others should and is rejected. However I have seen a pattern in the work that is accepted by the moderators. Is there favoritism being shown? Absolutely! it is only human nature keep submitting your own work and you to may join the "Admiration Society"

Yeah, OldMsgt. That's why most of my walls are PPO.

No one has a free ticket. Your "Old Boys' Mutual Admiration Society" is something I haven't seen. Moderation is applied fairly, and not by one single Moderator.

Members with Journeyman and above ranking can submit (with some special exceptions) without Moderation. That's because they've learned the rules and exercise judgment and self criticism on their work.

Clearized, please read one of the rejection emails.

Thanx for the support everyone. I think Island Dog nailed it. I didnt put the "permission" file in the zip(shaking my head). I'll work on it and resubmitt my works later.

OldMsgt, 'older' members [such as yourself] may be granted a little more leeway with uploads/submissions/comments as their past history/conduct may actually warrant it. [The 'promotion' system is part of that process.]

That's about as far as "Old Boys Mutual Admiration Society" [your phrase] may apply....;)

I almost left the site once.  I had lots of stuff then, but I was concerned about other sites using my stuff without permission.  (At the time, I thought my stuff was ONLY on WinCustomize, but I was dead wrong.) Later realized that once stuff goes online, it stays online (even after deletion).   I Moved on, and still love WinCustomize.

As for uploading, you could TRY to make your own graphics instead of using photos.  (Requires a bit more talent, but still.)  That's what most of us do here on the site. (I think)  Or modify photos in a creative way (like adding special effects to them and stuff).

However, if you like to use your photos, you're more than welcome to use them as your wallpaper on your desktop and submit to the "screenshots" gallery.  There's almost no chance for rejection.

You've already uploaded 3 Logon's in just one day?  That's impressive.  I upload stuff about every 1-2 months-ish. Sometimes more. Great start!

Don't give up.  Your journey has just begun...(On WinCustomize)

"Later realized that once stuff goes online, it stays online (even after deletion). "

If your works are on Wincustomize only...and you delete/remove them then they will no longer be 'online' or accessible.

Just to clarify...;)

So, as with all circular reasoning, it's your way or I belong to the 'other group'? That's assuming implicitly in the proposition that which needs to be proven: "The FOMAS" (my abbreviation).

Put more simply:

Well I think Im done with trying. I could take a picture of my big toe, make a skin from it, and it would still get rejected even with a permission slip saying it was my toe...lol.. "New Guy Discrimination"?? I've seen work on here that has photos Ive had on my computer for years, and know it would be impossible to track down the original owner, and get permission. In fact most of the photos I have are FREELY avail on the net. Anyone know of any other sites where I can post my work with less discriminatory rules? If not I guess I'll enjoy my own work :-) Thanx again for listening to the new guy everyone.

"Freely available" on the net does not mean 'free for you to reproduce and distribute'. This site is strict regarding IP rights. Always has been. You have to comply or don't submit.

Jafo has threshed this out endlessly with members, and the policy stands for all the right reasons. Your argument is not new, and for its rebuttal please refer to the search function in Forums.

Head over to deviant Art. There doesn't seem to be strict Moderation there.

"FREELY" available means you can use them for personal use on your computer without needing permission.

If you didn't take the photo then you do need permission to upload it to another site.

A picture you took of your big toe would come under the same rules.  If someone wished to use it on their computer they wouldn't need permission but if they wanted to upload it as a wallpaper to any site then they would require permission from you first.

There is no "New Guy Discrimination".

And unless your big toe is awful purty, it would probably get rejected. No one wants your toe on their screen....unless they have a foot fetish!!  ;P

I became curious, as I hadn't seen these submissions....

LogonXP is actually MORE than plonking some wall image 'found' somewhere on it as a background, there's actually other 'bits' to skin.

Each of these submissions was specifically poor, irrespective of whether the source of the image and its use was approved or not.

Images 'found on the net' are almost always freely available for PERSONAL use. That means you the downloader are free to use it/them on your desktop as wallpapers/whatever.

Almost NEVER is free consent granted to publicly redistribute in any form what-so-ever, certainly not without a process of formal request/approval, or at least the inclusion of 'included copyright' from the source indicating such.

These Logons failed on both counts - quality AND consent.

There are other sites where you 'may' be able to upload/display/distribute these, however no matter where you are still violating the original artists'/photographers' copyright.... and yes, it IS YOUR job to seek/obtain consent to use/distribute. IF it's 'hard work' well, that's life.
