Best Wishes to Elizabeth Edwards

I saw news (via CNN) that Elizabeth Edwards, former spouse of adulterer and former Vice Presidential candidate John Edwards, has been told by her doctors that further cancer treatments would be fruitless and thus she is discontinuing such treatments.  I'm saddened by that news.  While her former husband's politics were not in agreement with my own, I believe she handled herself with class throughout, and certainly didn't deserve to be cheated on or cursed with the plaque we call cancer.

The news article describes her situation as weeks, not months.  Hopefully each of those days will be precious time for her and her family to spend together.  On a positive note, it would seem that she (and they) will be able to work on some goodbyes as they spend what they know could be their final moments together.

Admittedly, in the case of the loss of my wife, the one thing I wish for, as talked about in the lines of a beautiful country song by a group named Diamond Rio, would be one more day (click through to get to Amazon where you can preview that song and others from the album).  I'm glad that my wife went quickly (to the best of our knowledge), but it still leaves me wishing that I was able to tell her goodbye while she was here amongst us.  Unfortunately we don't get to choose, at least not without cheating ourselves, our families, and our maker, how and when we go.  When it's time, it's time.  Those that do have some advance notice are perhaps a bit luckier in knowing so they can use their time wisely, but it doesn't lessen the pain that will be there in the future for the family that is left behind.

Again, hopefully Ms. Edwards will be comfortable in what seems to be her final days, and hopefully her time with her family will be blessed.

My sympathies to Ms. Edwards as well. I don't believe she should give up, but that is a personal decision, and I'm not privileged to her information.

I'm also sorry her scumbag ex-husband made the remainder of her life miserable, when it should have been made as comfortable as possible.

Elizabeth Edwards was and is a member of du.org.  As such, the dirt of that site has rubbed off on her as well.  However, to her credit, sh did ask for civility when the slime on that site was reveling in the plight (and subsequent death) of Tony Snow.  At this time, those of us who disagree with everything she stood for and believed in can point to that moment as defining her as at least a decent person.  Who suffered much from people and events that were not of her own making.
