Multiplayer disappointment (false advertising), website revision?
I've tried playing Elemental now since release (or, whatever our pre-release was called as a digital pre-order), and have had some fun with it - when it's working. I've definitely seen signs of improvement with the patches, and tried the modified executable posted by another user in the support forum - that seems to work pretty well, but I have yet to finish a game on anything but a small map due to constant out-of-memory and other bugs (such as the end turn button, or even entire UI, locking up and making the game unplayable, even after reloading) - please note I run an x64 Windows 7 system with 8GB memory, so I do find the out-of-memory issue amusing (although I understand the problem as it has been described). This gets to be a bit frustrating after 200-300 turn progression, of course, and rather than moan and complain since I know the issues are being worked on, I've already resolved myself to waiting at least several months before I even attempt to play again - and from what I've been reading, I can expect an all-new game, essentially. While I have my concerns, especially with the frequent, drastic changes made in the name of 'balancing,' I am still hopeful.
My biggest concern is the messages being sent by the devlopment team regarding multiplayer. I actually stumbled on EWoM when looking for a game to play with family - a couple of family members and I play a number of TBS games, including Warlords 2-4, Battle for Wesnoth, and Civilization (4, usually). When I found EWoM, one of the prominent 12 key features was "Single player or Multiplayer (up to 16 players)." Great! After a little research, there hadn't really been much word on multiplayer, so I went ahead and pre-ordered, hoping for the best.
We're now 1 month past the release date, and a "key feature" is still missing. Frogboy noted that the multiplayer servers would be turned on shortly after launch; this was delayed for technical reasons. Now 'multiplayer' is 'functioning' in 1v1 and 1vAI (i.e. 1v0 in terms of multiplayer) form - we still do not have a functioning cooperative multiplayer system. I was expecting something like this to have been enabled by now, as there was a post by Frogboy (or maybe another dev) alluding to the fact he looked forward to playing the game cooperatively with his son.
Obviously, multiplayer is a long ways off - at least in any "good" form (as alluded to in the recent dev journal by CariElf). To my dismay (and some others), it clearly wasn't a chart-topper in the recent poll for most desired updates. I can accept all of that. What is truly unacceptable, as I work in a similar field, is the false advertising still prominently displayed on the "Gameplay" page of the website - as noted previously, pre-release, one of the prominent 12 KEY features was "Single player or Multiplayer (up to 16 players)." Clearly, this is not a PRESENT key feature - it is a PLANNED feature. Something should be modified here, or at least a section added explaining the multiplayer situation, as this is blatantly misleading (unless you want to get into a discussion of "undefined terms" such as "multiplayer" meaning computer players as well, which would be an argument that wouldn't hold up too well, believe me).
I honestly do not post this intending to be a troll - I've gotten some enjoyment out of Elemental as noted (and expect the game to improve drastically), and love other Stardock games and the Impulse service (way better than Steam). But as I noted, I work in a similar field and know this can be pretty damaging. Similarly, I would have forgotten all about it had a friend not recently asked me if "I had heard of that Elemental game" and then proceeded to tell me it might be something we should try, as it has multiplayer features. I'm sure the argument will come up that people should "research before they buy" but to someone looking at a box in a store, or less inclined audiences, that is a pretty misleading statement to market your product with - at least if it's not a feature already present.
For my own part, I'll be requesting a refund as there has been no real progress on this front (and it will evidently be a much longer time before there is any), with the full intent of coming back when Stardock has had a chance to really refine the game. Nonetheless, I did want to point out an apparent flaw on the website in the hopes it is changed to prevent any future disappointed customers in the near-future!
Thanks!
