What do the strategic map tile bonuses do? Some give +50% defense, others give +25%, etc. What do these do? Do they somehow affect a tactical battle's map?
Yup, if you're attacked in a square with +50% defence you'll get +50% defence on the combat map.
They aren't usually tied to terrain features either. If you open up tactical maps in the map editor you'll see that they generally put those tiles in a pattern that gives both sides an even amount of the bonus tiles in a symmetrical pattern.
