Is there a point in where you place your improvements? Most of the time i just randomly place the improvements around city. Is the improvement placement there just for look?
You could close up small passages so that no enemy units can pass without attacking your city.
And your units can leave your city from any city tile. So there is another possible advantage.

for huts
for industry
for knowledge
but doesn't matter, but i like to plan my city
