Help with starting out/build orders?

I got the game today and am completely lost with how to go about efficient and effective build orders. I always find myself trying to make decision between crafts, stations and research - and I always seem to make the wrong choice to the point where I have extremely poor recource managment and then get stomped.

Was hoping someone might be able to give me/point me towards some good build guides and so on?

well build either a colonizer capital ship (Akkan/Mothership/Jarrasual) or a Carrier Capital ship (Sova/Halycon/Skiranta) for your first and free cap, if you go with a Carrier Capital ship you will need a colonizer frigate

scout area and start by colonizing the asteroid (they are easiest to set and give descent)

see how close your enemy is

if he is close go straight to military techs

if he is far off or an AI set down two civilian techs and get the ability to colonize volcanic and ice planets

you can then scuttle the civilian tech lands and go military

LRFs (Javelis/Illumiators/Assailants) are the best bang for your buck with Flak frigates (Gradas/Defense/Sentinels) for protection in early game

after that this game gets to fluid to really set things in stone

I would add if you go with a carrier at first, depending on the map you might want to actually build two colony frigates. The reason is one can be used to immediately poach a likely nearby asteroid using the colonize-defense platform-kill krosov tactic. However,   antimatter is a concern when it comes to colony frigates. If you have to retreat and jump to go to the other direction where your carrier killed a neutral fleet (or 2) then you might have to wait a long while to colonize those 2nd and 3rd planets (jumps + am delay to colonize). Also colonize in the direction of your enemy if you can and leave those nasty planets with big neutral fleets that are in your backyard alone until later. Oh and if you are initially going for one cap ship at the start (the usual practice) then don't be afraid to scuttle the cap ship factory. The more money you pocket early the faster you can expand your borders or build your econ.
