WinCustomize Certified Spyware SAFE

Aluria is perhaps best known as the developer of Spyware Eliminator, a product selected for bundling by AOL. Aluria has recently begun offering review and certification services for websites and WinCustomize is among the first to join the program.

In order to qualify for Aluria’s SAFE Certification, a website must meet the following criteria:

- Not sell, offer or promote products or services related to adware, spyware or malware.

- Not install or cause to install programs designed to track or monitor user’s browsing habits.

- Not present persistent items, including pop-ups, controls, scripts, etc. that do not allow users to easily close or refuse the item on the first attempt.

- Not present misleading controls including close or cancel options that continue installations.

- Not be affiliated with companies, programs or websites detected by Spyware eliminator.

“Stardock is committed to assuring subscribers and visitors a safe experience” said Larry Kuperman, Vice President of Sales at Stardock. “Aluria’s SAFE Certification is a great idea and we urge other websites to comply with these criteria.”

I like GAIAStevef's idea. Put it at the right hand side of the top of the page. I think it's great that I can feel (and everyone else) that I am safe while online.

*Looks at the bottom right at the Aluria Software/Stardock Spyware Safe button.* Looks like you guys took GAIAStevef's advice. It is really good that Aluria is doing this, and even better that Stardock passed the test.

I have a question...What if a website passes the test, and then changes their content?..

xxZeroVirusxx I guess the users tricked by such site can report it, and the certificate will be lifted if proven invalid. The page linked under that button offers an option to report a breach.

Excellent news.

However, I think its almost 'sad' that a respectible site such as this actually needs to go out and get certified as 'Spyware Safe.' What is the internet coming to?

So? Unless Aluria plans on checking out the entire Internet and providing some sort of automated lookup utility/toolbar, what's the point? I believe that pro-active solutions such as alternative browsers, XP SP2, or filtering proxies will always be much more effective than any non-mandatory scheme such as this.

Certification is a good idea, although I have always felt safe on Stardock sites. But there is something that has sneaked in: A HotBar ad on the Cursor XP site. Maybe somebody should remove that?

Awsome - this is a great way to start making this crap go away - As the "support guy" for friends and family - SPYWARE / ADDWARE sucks, and it should be delt with, Thanks guys for helping us ALL out.

Maybe some one can build a toolbar for the Wincustimze browser, that would allow a report to a master DB from Aluria - Hey I can't code, so I am only suggesting - - - -
