When trying to load my autosave the game crashes. Trying to load the older autosave just freezes the whole thing.

As I've experienced, and not sure if your issue is similar.
But you need to wait before loading any save game. Until the computer has had a good 15-20 seconds of choking on the multi-threading it's trying to do.
Basically the game is stuttering along for a good 30 seconds at times. But wait till the music starts playing again without any choppiness, and then it should load okay.
