Download counts on WinCustomize

Most people are probably unaware of this but download counts on WinCustomize are unique among skin sites.  Our goal with download counts is to see how many different people are using a given skin or theme or wallpaper.

To that end, only *complete* downloads are counted and only counted one time.  When you see a skin with 2,000 downloads that means 2,000 different people have downloaded it.  Even if it gets updated, a redownload of it doesn't count as another download.  Most sites detect downloads as purely the # of times the download link has been accessed. If we did this, the typical skin, particularly a popular one, would have several times more downloads displayed than they currently do.

So when you see your skin or theme has 500 downloads, that means 500 different people have downloaded it.

/me wonders how one would go about tracking whether or not a download was completed

The server gets a message when the file transfer is complete.

The only true way to tell is this way...

Hmm, the only message the server would get is a "close connection" thing. Unless it's wrapped into a script that first pushes the file and then executes more code.

/me ponders
