Hunting for DX ideas

Hunting for DX ideas

Recently there has been a marked upturn in the number of people I have noticed getting involved in DesktopX and providing feedback. This is possibly because recently there have been same excellent objects made, and widgets are making things even easier.

Numerous comments come in saying how useful these things are and how great the ideas are, but some of us are running short of ideas! Now Tiggz seems to have the monopoly on combining great ideas with awesome graphics but I'm sure he like me can't keep coming up with new ideas all the time.

What do people want to see made in DesktopX? If you can't make some of these things why not come up with the ideas, and maybe we'll get a chance to make them come to life?

Looking forward to hearing ideas, now I'm off to open the floodgates!

I would just love to see a highly interactive DesktopX theme built coinciding with Halo 2

I would like to have a animated WINDOW. Like a Kitchen Window, or Living room Window that was animated to the curent weather. Not the whole desktop, just a portion.
So it looked like a real window with outside view.

Same deal with an animated Fireplace
(I used to do this stuff with Active Desktop, but that ate alot of resources.)

Also, A picture frame like the one in Harry Potter of the Harry's dancing parents would be cool. (Really just a framed video clip I guess)

expose-ish type of application that lets you manage your windows, or similar alt-tab replacement like the windows powertoy which shows thumbnails of your tasks - however that powertoy has problems with some of my apps so a desktopx varient might help. something that tiles your titlebars or icons at the LEAST would be a sure-fire legal alternative.

'sketch pad' - lets you draw either directly on the desktop, or in a whiteboard type setting to make quick doodles - MSN messanger's whiteboard is an excellent example - would love to be able to save desktop doodles as an image (transparent png!!) but saving could be accomplished by an:

'image capture' utility to let you draw a box and save the contents as an image..usefull for taking quick snapsshots of something you are working on to send out.. i think every skinner here could appreciate that.

mail checker - more functional than what we usually see in a checker.. similar to the groupwise notify that lets you see the time and subject line of an incomming message and let you launch the mail app or message, or delete it.. for outlook or hotmail addies. i havn't looked at the VAST amount of mail checkers because most don't do this so i don't know if this has been done.

'alarm clock'

'label colors' to change an icon or icon's text label to a color (yes, yes.. like osx...)

'send to' desktop items.. drag a file over it and it goes off to an email, to a disk, to a zip, or to the internet.

'magnifying glass' - similar to the powertoy but you drag IT over what you want to zoom in on, instead of just zooming up on your cursor

'desktop level mixer controls' for all of your audio devices (dunno about the rest of you but i have like..15 input/output sliders ). martin, you're a god if you can put a speaker fader on the desktop to control front and rear speakers.

smexx's idea of a desktop audio visualizor would be aweesome.

'window-in-window' - lets you bring up your desktop, for example, in a small window on top of everything else so you can a desktop icon.

fun:

grab an icon or window and throw it against the screen and it bounces all over the place. usefull for when SDC is pissing you off.

a clumsy little puppy that chases your curor and tries to jump at it, grabs your cursor and runs off with it if you arn't paying attention.

people are gonna kill me, but..:

objectdock for dekstop x.. so while running dx and only dx, you get all that functionality of being able to tree out folders.

I would like a simple ledger, to keep track of my cash on hand without opening my whole financial application.  Just be able to make a quick note what came in, what went out and a comment where.  Then later on when i had more time, I could enter that into my regular application.  If it had another section, kind of like a budget planning section, that would be good too.

I'm glad that you came up with this idea Marin! I was thinking of something similar the other night, especially seeing in the CursorXP catagory of cursors, alot of them are the same. I'm also finding that a lot of the DesktopX Objects are very, very similar. I myself would love it if creators would include instructions on modifying scripts more often when the occasion for such applets could apply.

I would like to have an Object for watching TV through my TV card. I also like that idea of DesignCaddy of ObjectDock either built within, or as an add-on, for DesktopX. I'm getting rather tired of seeing that, "We don't support this application," type stuff for them, since I don't know if I can trust the ObjectDock or not.

One thing I would also like to see Martin, and this is for you, though it's not related to DesktopX is that "Backwards Clock" that you did for Beatnik. Perhaps a date could be included underneath like a hanging sign.

Take care, and thank you for doing this.

The only thing I want, that doesn't already exist, is a program launcher! An easily customizable program launcher, where I don't have to clone objects and align them, and change their properties for each program...if you can somehow automate that. It would be beneficial to each and every single DX theme in the library right now...

danilloOc, Wet Monkey, and anyone else who would like them,

My PDF documents made it through without corruption.

Would be happy to e-mail them to you (DX developer guide, DX scripting guide, and DX users guide).

Just send me an e-mail at [email protected]

Things I'd love to put on my DX desktop...

* A moon phase monitor
* More diversity in search bars i.e., something like the ones I can put into firefox, where I can choose what I want to search from one search box.
* Slide show frame
* A clipboard organizer like the old mac scrapbook
* A TV viewer, better yet, how about a theme that functions like windows media center or myth TV only better. That would ROCK!!

Thanks Corky-O.. I just renamed them with a .doc extension as suggested by someone in this post and that seems to have worked. But thanks for the offer

How about a more extensive scripting tutorial or better yet a weekly scripting lesson on the main page so that some of us more novice users can start to do more scripting of objects. I have done a few scrited objects but only by studying other objects with a function I liked the modifying the script (with a little trial and error) untill I got it to function the way I wanted it to. I mean I would love to be able to build script the way martin and tiggz do but I just haven't found a clear source on how to write script in DX.

For those interested in a Moon Phase monitor: be patient. I'll be posting one in a few days. I guarantee it will not suck.

I would love to see a way to have IRC built into the desktop, like what you can have in linux. The text just scrolls on your desktop and the backround is transparent.

Support of objectmedia for cds (cdtext+freedb) and therefore a nice dxobject (possibly with cover) would be all I would wish.
Hah, c242, I just wish Objectmedia wouldn't crash on me ever other song. That would be more than enough to make me happy.

Seriously though I would really like to see more media player objects. There just seems to not be nearly as many of those as calendars and weather items. I would also love to have something similar to Expose (as has been mentioned). Trillian or Gaim type objects that connect to multiple IM clients and can be part of the theme or embed in the desktop.

That is all I have right now.

How about a stardate calender tuned to current time. Thanks to anyone that gives it any thought.

A Media Center replacement would be nice. Nice (animated?) icons across the top for different media types and across the bottom for advanced configurations. Detect currently installed media apps and provide a list to easily pick from with a remote control. Highly configurable to favorite apps for individual media types (I like Winamp for everything. Especially over Media Player - go ahead, flame me). Animated background (maybe NightTrain2002's idea for stardate calendar? Sounds cool), screensaver, desktop calendar and clock, weather minder, blah, blah, blah, etc.

I'm not good in the graphics or scripting depts (yet) but I have a vision.

mm morphing reminded me of something.. i use quicken (unfortionately) and would love a billpay reminder.. its sort of like a mail checker, but it works with uicken (duh) ms money's got a nice one that sits in the system tray, if you need an example. but a wiget/object for doing fast actions to quicken would be fabulous

(hee hee.. i said faaabuloouuus).
