Tuesday night skin blogging...

Tomorrow I'm gone for vacation for a few days. Going to South Padre Island down in the gulf of Mexico. My first vacation in 2 years. Pity it's only for 4 work days.

So the GUI Olympics is coming to a close. Man that took a long time. I don't know if we'll ever do another one or not. It's a lot of work. The User's Choice Awards came out this week. They essentially mirrored the judges. What was particularly ironic is that on the Winamp side, the users chose essentially the same skins the judges did despite the shrieking from certain Winamp users of the idiocy and other charges on the part of the judges for not recognizing the genius in some of the other Winamp skins. Make sure you visit www.guiolympics.com to see all the results (best team, best skin, etc.). Antares

Best Teams and individual skins and such can be found HERE.

If it weren't 9pm I'd put up some screenshots of the upcoming ObjectDock Plus.  But then again, if I had more time, I would have announced that ObjectDock 1.02 (freeware) was released a bunch of "little fixes" in it. ObjectDock Plus is going to rock though. It has, amongst other things, tabs, skinnable system tray docks, a Start menu, fan-out menus, multiple docks, multiple monitor support, and a bunch of other neat things. For the Plus version (which will probably be around $20 to register -- ObjectDock itself will remain freeware), our goal was to make something very useful and not just a toy.

Also this week Object Desktop users were treated to WindowBlinds 4.38. Don't let the version fool you though, something significant is in this new version that we aren't talking about yet. If all goes well, we'll talk about what is new in it a great deal. But for now, we'll be interested in finding out if people find it even faster than 4.3 was.

In last week's poll about DesktopX, a lot of people had no idea what IconX is. Okay, in a nutshell, IconX is a feature in DesktopX to enhance your existing desktop icons. When you enable it, your desktop icons can be made any size you want, have shadows under them and even zoom and and out as you put your mouse over them. It's incredibly slick.  You can see it for yourself and it's a free download. www.desktopx.net

I was on NPR this week and CNBC last week doing interviews with regards to The Political Machine. We expect to go gold this week with it for an August release.

Apologies for not getting around to doing a new Stardock TV yet.

When I get back, some of the WinCustomize version 4 features should be almost ready to beta test. Just as the launch of the original site was controversial, there will probably be some controversy about the new site features. One of the features we hope to put in there is to enable a way for skinners with Master access level to submit skins, suites, icon packages, etc. as premium content that they can, in turn, get paid for.  After all, we are constantly hearing from certain users how wrong it is for skinners not to get paid. We agree! Though we hope that this system will result in net increase of free skins too.  After all, to get to Master access one has to go from Citizen to Apprentice, Apprentice to Master Apprentice, Master Apprentice to Journeyman, and Journeyman to Master. And to do that one has to contribute a great deal to the community.  Quite a few skinners will get promoted to Master when I get back so that we can start a pilot program on this.  But this should be a win-win for everyone. And while some other skin sites have had to move to bundling spyware with their skins and wallpapers and such, WC's cut of premium skins should enable WinCustomize to afford to keep growing and avoid doing pop up ads or any other annoying revenue generating tactic. And best of all, skinners will have a way to get even more back than just fame and adulation, they'll be able to make enough money to upgrade their software, buy new hardware, or who knows what else depending on how well it does.

Speaking of WinCustomize v4, it's going to include a lot of article writing features and blogging. We want to encourage people to create tutorials and tips and tricks articles.  After all, if a half-literal dolt like me can whip up Stardock TV in a few hours each month, imagine what people with actual talent could do.  WC4 will be set up in such a way to help those people syndicate their work to millions of people.  A lot of the focus is going to be put on the people who "Create stuff". We want to do a lot more than we have thus far to highlight those who make sites like these possible.

Also this week Galactic Civilizations: Altarian Prophecy was released (and yes, when WC4 comes and people can write their own articles they can shamelessly promote the other stuff they work on too! <g>).

One thing I would like to find out about is why people on WinCustomize don't comment very much on news items or forums.  I mean, over at the site I news moderate (Neowin.net) articles get tons of comments.  But here, even though WinCustomize gets nearly 3 million unique visitors each month, a typical news item will only get a couple of comments.

Well that's about all for now.  BTW, if you're interested in writing articles and getting them read by a lot of people, make sure you check out www.joeuser.com. It's a free blog site we've put together that has features no other blog site on the Internet has. One advantage it has is that it auto-promoted good articles so your writings won't languish in total obscurity necessarily.

See you next week! I'll be sunning with the wife and kids!

I'm really looking forward to the new version of WinCustomize and ObjectDock Plus. Can hardly wait. Will ObjectDock Plus be included with the Object Desktop subscription? Or is it a separate purchase/registration?

Apparently, one feature is that I can't move the command window just using the mouse .

I'm pretty sure that's not an intentional feature

I have mixed feelings about that" Master Apprentice". I reed that quite a few skinners will have that status.
I hope that this isn't going to mean that in time we are going to pay for all the skins or that the free skins are just very simple skins.
on the other hand for the skinners it is good if they get money for their skins. However, i hope this will be a fair price.
But then what is a fair price.....

coming down here to Texas are ya?

I apologize first for all of the texans you meet and the "maybe" terrible weather.

I would like to know if objectdock plus will be part of OD as well.

I'm lookin forward to all of the features of the new WC. I'm on the fence though as to the premium skin sales though. I'm all for giving skinners the only place I know of the ability to sell their skins directly. But I know that I will never become a "Master" level on this website. I took it upon myself years ago to never get indepth and involved in forums. That way no one can ever say "man xino is a jerk." or "you didn't help me like I wanted." I'm not saying that will happen here, but this has happened to me alot in the past. I don't wish for that sort of "stigma" to become a problem here. I stand by my name and I will help almost anyone who asks. unless I upload a lot of skins in a short amount of time, I don't see myself become a "master".

with that statement aside I'm looking forward to everyone's skins that may go up as premium skins.

thanks alot for this opportunity on behalf of all of us lowly skinners.

Brad. Have a nice break you sound as though you need it. Can't wait to see some of the changes you have in store for us. Exciting times and i know i have said it before and i will say it again - You guys could never be accused of siting on your butts or standing still. Great to see and i hope the membership of this site appreciate the work that you and your team do to bring us all such enjoyment for what is a relatively small outlay. Good on you mate

But, but, but , I can't wait til you get back for a promotion. It has to be done before you leave. Seriously, your vacation doesn't come even close to a higher priority than my status.

Have a great relaxing time. Excellent job holding the competition together. You work too much!

Can't wait for OD Plus!!

"I mean, over at the site I news moderate (Neowin.net) articles get tons of comments. "On a comparative ratio, WC vs Neoweenie, I think it's safe to say WC get's less idiotic newspost replies than they do.Plus less brainless flaming. (We save that for the messageboards here....)

@ Hippy

ObjectDock Plus! I am so going to buy that! $20 seems a little steep, but if it does what you say it does, that is incredible!

"Master CerebroJD" Hmm....I like the sound of that.

Master Apprentice DWatson... It's got a nice ring to it...

Well, if WB 4.38 is noticable faster than WB 4.3, then I'd say that's a pretty big thing. I assume that's it from reading the history notes in SD.

I agree that good skinners deserve money for their best skins. However, I don't necessarily think that WinCustomize is the place for such a paid community. I was initially attracted to WinCustomize because it offered a community where skinners, iconists, and artists can distribute their creations and have others download their work. Whenever I submit something, I feel contented when I see the comments people have made, as well as how many times a piece of mine has been viewed/downloaded.

I also love this site from the perspective of an Object Desktop user. This site is a great place for anybody to download skins, icons, wallpapers, and other such stuff for free. It is the perfect compliment to OD, and hopefully will continue to be that way in the future.

However, I don't like paying for skins which could/should be public domain. After all, I am the type of person who switches skins every week or two, I don't use just one for an extended period of time. Because of that, the idea of paid skins does not appeal to me.

I also worry that perhaps some people may abuse the privilege of having paid skins available, simply submitting all of their work as for cash only. Perhaps this idea is absurd, but I believe that it could become a distinct possibility in the future.

Overall, I think that the concept of a paid skins service is interesting, but I don't really think it belongs on a site such as WinCustomize.

EDIT: Man, that was a long comment. I hope you read it, because I just poured five minutes of my life into writing it.

Well, remember that only those with the exalted rank of 'Master' will be able to submit commercial skins.

'Master' is a rank that is very difficult to get to, and I can only think of two of them off the top of my head. (adni18 and Mormegil)
It takes a huge amount of skill, work, and dedication to achieve this rank, and I would assume that those who have would like to get something out of it.
While not many people will be of the rank to sell skins on the site, I think it kind of defeats the purpose of those of us who have subscribed to the site in order to support it. Maybe some of the subscription proceeds should go to these excellent skinners to do "member's only" works and maybe get more subscribers???

Have a nice vacation !!!!!

> ObjectDock 1.02 (freeware) was released
> a bunch of "little fixes" in it

Apparently the fixes are:

1. Always on Bottom does not function correctly unless you open the progam and change the setting to something else and then back the Always on Bottom. If not, you can click on ObjectDock through applications that are covering it up.

2. Autohide speed options STILL do not work correctly if you have Show Very Smoothly ed. You need to open ObjectDock after every fresh start and check then uncheck the Autohide box in the options in order for it to work correctly.

3. .lnk files do not use their assigned icons anymore.

I really wish they would work on fixing the existing bugs rather than introducing all of these extra bugs and calling them "features".

About 2 or 3 versions ago ObjectDock was really close to perfect but now it is going way down hill.

Looking forward to the changes as they happen. Some ppl don't like change, but I prefer to embrace it. As long as we don't feel lost
As for comments, I think here you get more quality comments. On Neowin I see far more useless comments than anything of any worth. So here less is more.
