I was just gifted Sins (Collectors) a few days ago. Do I have all the expansions, or do I need to do some downloading of updates?
And how do I figure out which V.xxx I have?

When u load game on main screen u should have ver number in one of the corners.
Another option is to install impulse register game and it will let u know which ver u got and when update is available.
Note: In order to play SINS you do NOT need impulse running in background. So u can use it as a update option only. Actually u cannot update game without impulse.
The Sins of a solar empire collector's edition doesn't include the expansions.
Sins of a solar empire Trinity does.
You need to do some downloading.
Most likely no as to having the expansions, Greg30007 is correct in making sure you have the latest.
Impulse is nice to have as a little program that only operates when you want it too (please note that I have found Steam starting to follow that trend, finally) and will gladly help you find the expansion for this awesome game (highly recommend both for another $10 each for two).
I thought collectors edition include all expansions.

You do not have to have expansions to play latest SOASE. last version is 1.91 (If i'm not mistaken)
SOASE Entrenchment expansion adds star bases into game play. Latest ver is 1.51
SOASE Diplomacy has what Entrenchment has with addition of envoys and pacts. In order to play Diplomacy you need to have Entrenchment as well. Latest ver is 1.11
Impulse is good to have because you can get some games and also both SOASE expansions at weekend special sales at ridiculous prices (around 4 US$).
The Sins collector edition was available before entrenchment and included the soundtrack and other addons. The collectors edition needs to be updated lol

the current sins version numbers ARE vanilla sins 1.191, entrenchment 1.051 and diplomacy 1.011
