Vasari healing/repair ability?

Quick question for anyone who might know. I haven't played for a while and decided to play a quick skirmish tonight. I installed the new version (1.19 from 1.18) and played as TEC. I wasn't doing as well as I used to, not remembering which items to go for first and what not, but that's not really the point.

Anyway, in one battle against the Vasari AI I was left with 6 capital ships and some Kodiaks. The Vasari had two capitals, a Devastator and a Carrier and a variety of other ships (frigates and cruisers). I had all my ships target the Devastator but it kept healing (or was being healed (shields too!)). Needless to say I lost and the Devastator came out virtually unscathed. I didn't see any ships draining anti-matter and can't figure out what happened. I started a game with the Vasari and searched through their ships and tech (I don't ever play as that faction) but could not find anything that would enable something like this. The fight was in around one of their asteroids, but I don't recall any structures outside of maybe a missile battery.

So, can anyone tell me what happened? Did the game bug out? Was there some major change I missed in the patch notes? I've gone heavy on capital ships before and never had an outcome like this.

Thanks!

the Carrier (Skirantra) has a repair ability called Repair Cloud

thats what was doing the healing

oh and next time focus fire on the Skirantra Carrier, 1.19 really buffed up their capabilities (currently the most used capital ship)

While the Vasari capital carrier has a great fleet repair ability (only hull) and the Vasari overseers are perhaps the best support cruiser for caps (250 hp and extra armor), if it was healing shields and at a fast rate what you were probably seeing was the Devastator's ultimate ability. I think it is called disintegration and it does massive damage to one ship and gets a huge shield and hull restore buff, to the point that it is usually fully healed (just the devastator). This has surprised plenty of players besides you because the AI doesn't get level 6 devastator's too often, and it is one of the few ultimate abilities the AI seems to use. As for its weakness, I think the healing stops if the target ship is destroyed (but the target is usually one of your caps), and it has a really long cool down time (at least 3 minutes, maybe longer). I'm not sure if it can be interrupted, but if it can, an Akkan with ion bolt is your best friend. :D

Anyways, you would have probably been better off going for the carrier, even if the devastator didn't have disintegration because the carrier can heal the whole Vasari fleet and strikecraft. If you see the shield restore buff on a devastator, just switch targets until its done and then you should be able to destroy it in more than enough time before it can use it again.

The Vasari have two healing options (not counting the static repair platform); the Overseer Cruiser and the Skirantra Carrier Capital Ship.  The Skirantra heals everything in an area around itself, and the Overseer can heal a single target.  The Kortul Devastator has the ability to regenerate its own shields at a rapid speed (this ability also boosts its attack damage), but cannot heal anything else.

The fact that you had six capital ships (300 command) and still didn't have enough firepower to get through the enemy's healing tells me you probably have way too few combat units.  Just as a rough guess, I'd suppose you had 6 capital ships and maybe 20 Kodiaks.  That's 200 command in combat frigates, and 300 command in capital ships, a lopsided balance.  For six capital ships, I'd be more inclined to have no less than 40 Kodiaks, 10 carriers, 20 hoshikos, and maybe 15 Gardas (680 command).

The Overseer ability is an instant hull boost, and can be done continuously if there are enough of them....it is not uncommon for the AI to have lots of Overseers, and when you focus on a single ship, you can bet every single one of those overseers is going to be adding HP as fast as it can to the target you're hitting...getting a boost of 250 HP every second or so can make it difficult to take out any target...given that the shields were regenerated as well, its clear that the Ultimate ability, disintegration, was being used...however, the Overseers + Repair cloud would have made it extremely difficult to take out that ship until the overseers and skirantra got low on antimatter...

In general, its likely you'll never need more than 4 capital ships unless the game goes on A LONG time....to put things into perspective, one capital ship at lvl 1 does about 50 damage per second...5 Kodiaks (which is 50 fleet supply, the same as a capital ship) do 18 * 5 = 90 damage per second...capital ships don't dish out that much firepower until their higher levels...abilities are what make capital ships valuable, not their firepower...you are better off having 2 or 3 high level capital ships than 6 low level capital ships, and with fewer capital ships, they will level up faster since experience points are distributed amongst all capital ships in the gravity well..

Overseers and the Skirantra can account for the hull repair. As for the shields, it's the Kortul's Power Surge, which will recharge its own shields at 25/35/45 per second.

yeah the Kortul Devastator is a good tank battleship, better than the Kol now
