We often hear someone say "There's too much junk in the library!" We have a rating system on skins but what if you want to find the cream of the crop? Well, you would still need to look through the library to see what the best skins are.

..But another way would be to look at the skins that the admins picked as their favorites...

You can now, in a given library, sort by featured. This lets you look at just things the admins have played around with and thought were good enough to feature. They are, effectively, the admins picks.

Isn't that where the sort by rating option is for?
sort by rateing is more or less the users top picks .. this would be the admins top picks ...

It may sound like a good idea, but...
with my resolution (1400x1050) almost all of the "featured" Sysmetrix skins are too small!

It would be nice if you could sort "by resolution"!

One man's JUNK is another man's TREASURE. There are tons of good stuff here that will never be featured.

I think this is a necessary "evil" to allow new visitors to the site/new users of products quick and easy access to some tried and tested good quality options.

It never will represent all that's good and great, but I don't think that's what's intended - as Lecrayon points out, tastes vary, and eventually people will look further and make their own judgements on the rest.

My only gripe is that my skin didn't make the grade

Ditto. I rarely agree with the Admin's "pick-o'-the-day". You guys need to find a better way of grading things. So far I have not been impressed with any of them. For example, one author publishes something that is great that gets 10 maybe, then he does the other colors on request and those only get 5-6. Those will get lost even though those colors might have been more appealing to any visitor. I don't know... The whole thing just seems too shaky.

Oh, and another thing. There seems to be a little bit (surprise) bias towards some people's products in the admin's picks. For example, go get the featured list from DX Objects, and you'll notice that Frogboy and _Martin_ keep repeating, and it's not hard to guess why. P

We don't claim any objectivity.  Some of you should start your own sites I suspect and see how well you do. Featured skins is a good way for most people to weed through stuff.

I am finding the rating system increasingly useless because people rate blech crap 8's regularly. The upcoming WC4 design will have a new rating system in it that will be much better I suspect.

I think you could have used a more tactful title for this post Brad. And if you don't claim objectivity, why should we think that the admins picks aren't junk as well....just junk done by certain people.

I think the main thing that you guys are missing is that, yes, it is your site and you're free to feature what YOU like, but that doesn't mean that's what the VISITORS like... How about featuring skins that get a lot of download in a single day? Or featuring skins that, as Solution design suggests, fit the type of skins you like according to a questionaire. For example, maybe I have a tendency to download darker skins, then my featured skin should be dark ones, not pink and yellow skins or the iPod and Mac skins that the admins might have liked.

Oh, heh, in the mean time, why don't we dump some of the JUNK anyway? It'll save server space. Might as well get rid of them. If you don't want to do it, I'll more than happily do it for you. I don't care about the flame...

Although I think the title is a bit condesending to those first-time skinners who upload or even those who truly do put out junk, I think its helpful to have whatever tools at our disposal to be able to locate skins we like.
Chances are good if one skin caught someone's eye then it might also catch mine.

However I have an idea (that may be in the works I don't know) that could help elleviate some of the concerns expressed here. Concerns about some skins getting lost in the shuffle.
I think everyone should be able to have a favorite skins list in their profile. The list would not be able to contain their own skins. The purpose being if you like skins done by an artist, perhaps you will like skins that they like also.
Just a thought.

wait wait wait....

this is kinda like Intel finally saying to all the braindead walmart-pc users that GHZ dont equal performance...

So there IS too much JUNK??? But I thought...

Ok, what I'm getting at, is that if there's too much junk, don't complain! And last but not least:

IN ORDER TO ELIMINATE JUNK, RAISE MODERATION!
referring to my last post:

I guess what I meant to say, is that if you don't like the junk, rasie the moderation level. That's the easiest way to solve the problem.

I should have put the article title in quotes since that is what the feature was in response to.

I should clarify that I don't think most skins are "junk". But we hear over and over how most skins are "crap" or whatever. What they are really saying is that those skins are not their taste.

I updated the article title to be in quotes.

Most people don't bother rating skins anyway. Unless everyone gives skins a rating, a true figure will never be known. Even so, as it as been said, everyone has different tastes.
