Sections in Jeopardy!

WinCustomize never removes sections. But we do try to keep only a limited number of very active sections available on the home page.

With going on 2.5 million unique visitors per month, we take great care over choosing just the right sections.

The following sections are in jeopardy of losing their home page status (i.e. users would have to click on the [more...] link).

  1. Widgets for SkinStudio
  2. NextSTART
  3. Litestep

The widgets section really is pretty hard core stuff so doesn't really belong on by default.

NextSTART is something we have pushed quite a bit but there have been no new themes uploaded in 2004. If you're a NextSTART skinner, now would be the time to a) submit your themes and b) help WinStep promote its use to others.

Litestep is an old favorite by many skinners and themers out there. But there's been only two new themes created in 2004 for it. If you're a Litestep advocate, now would be the time to spread the word to help get things going.

We have a couple of sections we'd like to put on deck:

  1. Rainlendar
  2. Samurize
  3. Trillian

Like I said, we don't remove sections but if any of these 3 programs are pulling ahead of the ones already listed on the home page, it's time for them to show that they're still heavily used or step aside and let others come up.

Your thoughts?

As paxx said, the library listing can be easily customized to show my faves...so I'm looking forward to having Trillian and Rainlendar skins added to the selection (not sure what samurize is).

Samurize is similar to sysmetrix but much more geeky and extremely customizable: www.samurize.com

I would like to put a vote in for all three suggestions (trillian, reinlender, and samurize)!

I'm already on record on the message boards promoting a new section for Rainlendar. While I would never compare skinning Rainy's to most of the other programs, the latest release of Rainlendar is making it more useful and IMHO more fun to skin with the To Do list, Event profiles, better support for Event icons, etc. And I believe that most of us don't consider a suite complete without a Rainy or Desktop X calendar. And even a lot of those who like Desktop X still want to have a Rainy...

I would also like to add my support for keeping Litestep on the front page. While it may not be that active a section on WC at the moment, an awful lot of good ideas and talent have come from people in the Litestep community - People I would think we should be hoping to attract to or keep in the WC fold.

Keep LiteStep and loose the other 2 mentioned.

Or maybe loose Beatnik and keep NextStart.

Frogboy: of course it´s irrelevant. that wasn´t the point. the point was that "only two themes created" could not be more wrong.

Well Samurize would definetly be a good addition. It takes quite a while to make a good config. And it's really cool; it can give you a lot of usefull info and witout being too obtrusive.

Trillian is allso nice. But it doesn't really need support imho. There are plenty of skins for it.

Rainlendar. Whats so special about it? You can do that in Samurise.

But it would really, really be a shame to see Litestep go because it gives tou an alternative to explorer (you know, that process that allways seems to have to lock up). The only program that I (yes I) have made a theme for (based on leatherbox, but better ).

Beatnik is getting a bit old too. I've only seen 1 skin worth using it for: Metrix timeboy. There are so many REALLY ugly skins for it.

Windows Media Player has only really ugly skins too, except for the ones by the Skins Factory wich are excellent if it weren't for the fact that they are solely promotional

And isn't dashboard an odd one out too? Its not for pc-use.

So there's maybe some more categories to evaluate. And I think popularity shouldn't allways be the yardstick. Give some reverence to the old ones too.

Trillian and Samurize would be awesome. Have wondered why trillian never had a slot here on WC.

LiteSTEP isn't 'going' anywhere....just not being included on the default list of apps.   My argument is that it is a significant 'skinnable' that puts it in the top end of quality/professional/intricate [call it what you will] detailed apps requiring 'real' effort or 'talent' to create, whereas certain other applications are mind-numbingly simplistic to create for and are comparatively 'inferior' in regards to outlay of effort.

There is absolutely no comparison between a LS theme and a bootskin, other than to loosely refer to both as 'skinning'.

Honestly, when a bootskin is rated a '6' it is done so in reference to other bootskins.  Were it to be rated per effort/input/complexity/relevance/etc compared with LS themes then they would not even register on the scale at all.

But that is not how it's done, so bootskins are compared with their ilk, and not some absolute....

trillion and rainlendar would prove to be the better to introduce as a fair amount of people use them. as for samurize, i'm not too sure.

Jafo or Brad, Couldn't the default library list that displays 19 apps simply be lengthened to say 24....in that way Trillon, Samurize, & Rainlendar could also be displayed WITHOUT having to remove important skin/apps like LiteSTEP - isn't that what scrollbars are for?
