Sections in Jeopardy!

Sections in Jeopardy!

WinCustomize never removes sections. But we do try to keep only a limited number of very active sections available on the home page.

With going on 2.5 million unique visitors per month, we take great care over choosing just the right sections.

The following sections are in jeopardy of losing their home page status (i.e. users would have to click on the [more...] link).

  1. Widgets for SkinStudio
  2. NextSTART
  3. Litestep

The widgets section really is pretty hard core stuff so doesn't really belong on by default.

NextSTART is something we have pushed quite a bit but there have been no new themes uploaded in 2004. If you're a NextSTART skinner, now would be the time to a) submit your themes and b) help WinStep promote its use to others.

Litestep is an old favorite by many skinners and themers out there. But there's been only two new themes created in 2004 for it. If you're a Litestep advocate, now would be the time to spread the word to help get things going.

We have a couple of sections we'd like to put on deck:

  1. Rainlendar
  2. Samurize
  3. Trillian

Like I said, we don't remove sections but if any of these 3 programs are pulling ahead of the ones already listed on the home page, it's time for them to show that they're still heavily used or step aside and let others come up.

Your thoughts?

Definitely Rainlendar. It's come up in suggestions quite a few times.

"counterpart' is not entirely accurate when comparing LiteSTEP with WB/Objectbar.....in fact they all three work together.

Yes, it's been quite slow of late in the LS section but that's just as likely to change sooner or later.  As with WB, themeing for LS gets more intricate as each evolves...and guaranteed, neither is as brain-dead simple to accomplish as Beatnik or Bootskins [if you take more than 10 minutes with those you probably just made two of them].

Naturally I'd rather see a 'quality' and sophisticated section being championed on the 'front page' as a high standard example of GUI customizing, on a par with any other Shell replacement around, and have the haven for 'fan art' and copyright 5-second rips [Bootskins] be nudged to the 'also rans'....at least until the advent of high colour capabilities.

237 Litestep themes vs 352 Bootskins....the latter adds up to maybe a 1000 individual images and ini files....just ONE alone of the former has 432 images and config files, etc, which exemplifies their relative significance and complexity, hence the 'frequency' of new works upped to the LS section.

LiteSTEP is not and never was a second-rate customizing program and should not be relegated but lauded for its significance to this skinning community...

All three will be great.

I've been hoping for a Trillian section for like a year now. I know that right off the bat there will be a few skin uploads for it.

Please point out where there are and so you can prove me wrong. but what i've seen as "skins" for msn messenger are just a different background for the contact list. what i'm talking about is a complete Gui change.including different buttons and skinned emoticons or replacement of them or an add-on to add more animated ones

Frogboy: "But there's been only two new themes created in 2004 for it."

only two themes created? you mean two themes uploaded to Wincustomize.
if you look at Litestep.net you´ll see that there have been 32 new themes in 2004.
DesktopX here: 23 in 2004 (i did not count the multiple resolutions for Konstrictor)
ObjectBar here: 2 in 2004

it´s like it always was over the years. when the Litestep community has a working LS.net activity on other sites drops. usually not as significant as now though.

fully agree with that one. unfortunately most Rainlendar skins don´t push skinning further as as well and are just one BMP image (usually cut-n-paste from a WindowBlinds skin or a msstyle) with fonts slapped on them. on the other hand i guess that´s what most people want anyways.

Ya I never use Widgets for SkinStudio, NextSTART, Litestep anyway so I dont mind them not being on the front page.

What about an AIMutation section? Deviant ART has one..it seems very popular these days and their website just came back online! It open source too.

downgrading LS? that's the only thing I come here for, nowadays! Oh, well. too bad ppl do not put in the effort to learn LS. since i've gotten it, nuthin else runs on my desktop but LS. but i feel ya, there haven't been many themes around here, probably cuz the LS community does not come here anywayz. for those still in love with LS, head out to ls.net (www.litstep.net) or the newly updated ls.com (www.litestep.com)/ peace :-/ bigup to jafo and moshi :-}

It's definetly in the Litestep community's best interest to support the Litestep section at Wincustomize. This is the one Litestep section on the internet I feel confident in it still being here in 6 months, 1 year, etc.

Without an online themes presence Litestep would risk sliding into oblivion. So by keeping a Litestep section in it's current status, Wincustomize is helping tremedously.

While activity in a given section is the main criteria for a section's status, perhaps it should not be the only criteria.

Also, lets not forget that you can customize that list to show the apps you want (on the Edit Acount page).  What Frogboy suggests is wat would show up by default.

Moshi: It's irrelevant how popular Litestep is at some other site. We only care how popular it is on this site.

Definitely Rainlendar. One of my favorites!! I hate LiteStep and wished I would never have gotten it. It always, always screws up my computer. I do enjoy Next Start and would "almost" even give it up for Raindlendar!!

Widgets, Litestep, and NextStart- definitely put them on the back burner. I would absouleutely, positively love to see a Trillian section (Pro and non-Pro) and a Rainlender section.
I never used the 3 things mentioned that are on the chopping block. But I do use Rainlender and Trillian, so that would be good if you did that.

I use LiteStep, Rainlendar (as a LiteStep module), and Trillian. I vote for those three - but I'll still visit the LS section here even if it isn't in the default menu. That's where I always go first anyway, after the front page. I think I'll upload my LS theme soon, too, and help boost those statistics.

Rainlendar, Rainlendar, Rainlendar
interestly, for those not in the know....
Rainlender started as and still is, a Litestep module
Reply #48 Top
Why not all three...I'm with that crowd. And remember everyone -- the sections being considered for removal are NOT being totally deleted from WC...just being removed from the Front Line is all.

Personally, I'd like to see Stardock come up with a standardized skinning engine for MSN Messenger also.

**Continues waiting for ObjectBar 2.0**
