Sins won't update.

I've just purchased Diplomacy, and to play that both Sins and Entrenchment need updated.

However, the Sins patch download gets stuck at 53.6% then errors out.

I can't play diplomacy without it!

Can anyone help?

Do you remember what the error was, exactly?  In Impulse, click the blue question mark button (upper right), and select 'View error log'.  Take a look through the most recent entries, and copy/paste anything that looks like an error and we'll take a look at it.  My first inclination is to try adding an exception for Impulse to any security software you might have, or even temporarily disable it to see if that helps.
