Update makes it easier?

Ok, so I've played the game a few times without updates on the default difficulty (Sub-normal Int) and found it pretty tricky for a newbie like me. When I then updated and ran it on same difficulty (beginner) it was a piece of cake!
Was it a onetime thing or did the update lower the AI?

I think one of the changes in 1.04 was something like "changed the lower difficulty AI's to do more stupid actions instead of just acting slower" or so... So, yes, they did lower the AI but only for the lower levels to make the game easier on em...

But another thing is the increase in your skills or simply a change in your colonization-strategy... If you don't know what to do to be able to colonize superfast, it appears to be much harder because you end up with much less planets... On the other hand, if you know it, it appears much easier...
