QuickTime Alternative will allow you to play QuickTime (.mov .qt) files. This way there is no need to install the offical QuickTime Player. As a bonus, Internet Explorer will play all QuickTime movies that are embedded in a webpage. You do need a player that is capable of handling QuickTime movies. The included Media Player Classic works very well with QuickTime.

The same people also make RealAlternative. Both of these "apps" are really cool and useful, but I'm pretty sure they both violate the licensing agreements of Real and Quicktime because they distribute the codec dll files from them.

I *love* the quicktime alternative! I'm downloading the Realplayer alternative even now. It's going to be great to be free from such shoddy software, finally!
