Wow, something's happening on the net this week.

Worldwide Internet traffic is distinctly down for the past couple of days even as response time gets worse and packet loss grows.

Whoever wrote those worm viruses needs to be shot.

There is another brand new one that took down all the computers in the Alpha and beta labs at the university,I forget the name of it.

So many people either have DSL or cable that this isn't much of an issue but for Dial-Up users, these slow-downs are a real pain in the neck. I manage my home computers and the ones at my local library, and with all the worms and viruses today, it is far too time consuming. Perhaps we should refer to the idiots who write these as "cyber-terrorists." >

I think if we ridicule the kid who was recently caught enough, the others might eventually realize that virus making does not make them look cool.

shooting is much too quick and painless. most of the people who take malicious, anonymous vengeance on the world at large are themselves pathetic worms who don't have the guts to confront the ugly real world head on. their mentality is about the same as the jerk who sees a new car he can't afford in the parking lot and keys it end-to-end. bomb planting is the ultimate cowardly revenge. worm launching runs it a close second.

Nah send 'em to organleggers.

If we are going to try, convict, and execute the authors of the worms...then I'd like to indict Microsoft, without whom none of this mayhem would be possible.Microsoft may be monolithic but they are not omnipotent. If they hadn't released software with so many bugs and vulnerabilities these worms would not exist.Instead of proper development and testing...they just release and update endlessly. There can be no denying that they have the money and resources to do it right the first time!

There is no such thing as perfect software. A modern operating system is very complex. The more complex the system the more likely it is to fail.

But I agree. People making virii and worms need to be convicted. Death penalty is a bit too much for me (but that's another discussion).

Much agreed!! Line`em up man!!!

They should be made to pay for the direct worldwide damages for their actions, even if it runs into the millions. It will basically make them think twice about who they are effecting and how much damage is being done in real terms.

They should take full responsibility for their actions. Digital or not, it's a form of vandalism on a huge scale.

Virus???what the hell is a virus????and how can it crash a properly setup computer???????Seems to me to many ignorant people dont know how to use the net and their computer correctly if these are such an issue...Its better off that those people are not online because of their inabiltyi to control their own system they are infecting and passing it around...I am specifficaly going for a Bachloers in Network security just because I feel that so many people out there are creating a huge demand for it...TURN AUTO UPDATE ON AND USE IT!!!!!!!!! BUY ANTI VIRUS SOFTWARE AND USE IT>>>people who use pirated copies of OS and Virus software like norton are going to get a bug.....Steal MP3s not OS and virus software...I knopw so many ppl using pirated Win XP and Norto0n..tThen they get infgected.....Spread nthe word not the bug....

Oh yeah, I cant type for crap!!!! But I still have yet to get a VCirus....And I DL all sorts of stuff

I hear that Drop125,
I cruise all over the net and haven't a problem, but I did take pains to insure I am protected well.
This is not to say they don't try to get in, as in a five hour period today, I had over 1500 access attempts, all of which slid right on by.

Dont put them to death....put them to work!

Have them deliver US Postal Mail on foot for 10 years. While they're at it, have them sort out the potential junk mail and double check that I havent gotten any of my neighbor's mail.

IN FACT.....have them verify that all return addresses are valid! *grin*

That's like blaming the victim for getting mugged. Viri do not exist because an OS has a security flaw, they exist because a few pathetic, socially maladjusted dweebs feel the need to exploit them to show how computer savvy they are. >

Whacking is too good for these sub-species nimrods. They should all be neutered so their defective DNA won't be passed on to future generations. >

What a bunch of ignorant over-reactions. This is exactly what's wrong with the justice system today. It's all about punishment and nothing about rehabilitation and fixing problems. People want nothing but retribution. We have runaway juries paying out billions for idiotic. Then we have people wanting others labeled terrorists because their internet access is slow.

I think the solution is finding something for these bored mostly white middle class kids to do. Maybe set them at creating patches for MS to fix the holes in the OS, or educating people on how NOT TO CLICK THAT ATTACHMENT and STOP FORWARDING THOSE CHAIN LETTERS. Then of course we also need to do something about all the spam, which HAS to be a burden on the networks like the trojans and virii.

your right michael, shoot the parents too
people need to take responsibility for their actions, the second were no longer accountable is the day I'll await the end.

Shot! That's too kind! They ought to be drawn and quartered on national television and have their intestines hanging out for availability to the flies and maggots and be slowly eaten alive! Shot! HA! Way too quick!

As far as rehabilitating them, that's not even an option. I work in the prison system, there is no such thing as 'rehabilitation', all they do is get out and commit another crime so they can come back in. Why not! After all, they do get free food, clothing, shelter, cable TV, and free education up to a Doctorate! Oh yeah, and they don't have to work if they don't want to either! Rehabilitating, that's a laugh!

Microsoft isn't helping with the computer problems. They just released a patch for a problem that allows malicious users to see what's on your computers memory from within the network.
Can't wait to see some of the exploits that will work with this bug.

Not sure what's worse: nasty worms messingup the Net infrastructure; the rampant baseheadedness displayed in a majority of the above comments; or this massively virus-free yet completely clogged up network here at work.

I think that Lightstar is being way too soft on these creeps. Gut-eating maggots just isn't severe enough---they should be eaten alive by piranhas. And mean piranhas at that! >

Seriously, I have no problem sending these worm and virus writers to jail----look at the mayhem they create, and on a huge scale, affecting both personal and business users of the internet.

Personally, I think that people in general just are not educated enough. They click on everything they see, including spamvertisements, yet complain about spam in their inboxes.

Same with that worm and various viruses. They all strive on the carelessness of users AND IT DEPARTMENTS. Both are to blame. Bashing M$ for making crappy software is all nice and dandy, but it doesn't help the problem at all. There have been serious security flaws in pretty much any major OS and major software. The crucial part is that they get fixed fast: by the manufacturer with a patch, by the IT departments and end-users by installing that patch.

Let me point out that the patch against the exploit used by the blaster worm was out WEEKS (about a month actually) before the worm hit. The sobig worm mostly relies on stupidity - people mindlessly clicking on attachments.

I'd bet I could write a program that exploits all of the abovementioned stupidities and smash the net to smithereens. Think about it... write a worm that propagates passively, by piggybacking on valid TCP/IP traffic. It would fool many firewalls. The ones where it would open a dialogbox for the users... well... ever wondered what happens if a worm looks for these dialogs and does the "confirm allow" on his own? A cleverly written worm would go undetected for a long, long time. In fact, with a good polymorphic function in it, it's rather hard to write reliable detection routines for it.

In my opinion, until someone bold (yes, BOLD) enough to attempt a REALLY nasty worm gets their mind to it, we haven't seen the end of it.

I'd give a MEDAL to whoever wrote the blaster worm. Now people hopefully get a LITTLE more security conscious. For the next few weeks at least - until the latest soap opera gets more important again.

I have never seen so much hate in a thread on WC. It disgusts me. Why is there no admin that deletes this thread.
