Here's an interesting article by az that goes over the state of alternative shells. It's definitely worth a read.

this has always been a credit to Stardock products...that they work out of the box unlike most alternate shell products. I don't have time to Photoshop up 100 icons for a Litestep dock of a theme that I'll use for 2 weeks.

I didn't know that Serenade was still in development - there was nothing new for a very long time. I've tried many of the alternative shells - always end up going back to explorer. With WindowsXP and Windowblinds I don't really need anything else.

I wrote the article out of simple frustration. It was kind of disappointing, but free software projects don't have budgets or timetables and often don't have the most professional code.

Some day soon I'd like to take a look at the shareware/commercial shell replacements, such as those from Stardock and others. I haven't had enough experiance with these (nor enough cash-on-hand) to do this yet.

Anyway, surprised that the article made a link here, I think this is the first site who's really noticed it

st_nick: not to knock stardock, or anything, but they do not make any alternative shells therefore it makes sense that there are not these types of issues associated with their software.

this kind of stuff is not programmed for computer novices. also it´s about functionality and not about eyecandy. wonder why people don´t get that.
if you don´t even know what shell means stay with AOL and WindowBlinds.

I don't think Starock has shell replacement.

of course Explorer works. 98% of the time.

Now to fix those DLL's

Have putzed around with a variety of shell replacements over the years. Had delightful results paring down Win98SE's Explorer with 98Lite and am eagerly awaiting release of XPLite at http://www.litepc.com/
