January Skin Site Index increases dramatically

Services such as Alexa provide rough estimates on the popularity of different websites.

Using this data over a period of time allows us to get a rough measurement of the overall popularity of skin sites and to see if customization is something that is increasing in popularity, steady, or on the decline.

The forumula we use is as follows:

100,000 / (1/Rank^1.25)

The benchmark sites we use are:
WinCustomize.com
deviantART.com
Skinnables.org
VelocityART.com
Teknidermy.com
ArtUproar.com
Deskmod.com
Skinz.org
Neowin.net
Skinbase.org
Customize.org
Pixtudio.com

We take the formula and add them up.

In December that number was 8.4.

This month it's increased to 9.0. A dramatic increase.

Most of the increase came from DeskMod, deviantART, and WinCustomize. But there was a general increase across the board.

The conclusion we reach is that people wanting to make Windows their own personal OS continues to expand into the mainstream.

Concidering that Microsoft isn't planning on creating a new OS but just updating what XP is. And I don't know about the Mac. But I think the reason is because of many reason.
1) Just bored looking at the same thing day by day. Especially those that are in front of it for hours.
2) More people in the world now
3) More people getting internet

BTW, for which sites I use as benchmarks, bear in mind that I picked these sites a year ago. It's quite arduous work to keep tabs on a lot of sites month after month after month. So even though I might want to add a Skins Factory or a WinXPTheme or even remove certain sites from the list, it would require me to essentially throw away a year's worth of stats.

That would imply you could never add "new" sites. Perhaps you should revise your formula somewhat to take that into account?

I'll worry about it if a new site shows up that really needs attention.

Adding sites is harder than removing sites. Most of the points come from 4 sites: WC, DA, Neowin, and Deskmod.

You can find out how many points a given site would be by looking at its alexa rank and applying the formula.

People can take the stats for what they are. If someone else thinks they can do better, more power to them.
