Next version of Netscape Launched!

Market share aside -- and a recent reported placed Netscape's share at less than 4 percent -- the new Netscape browser is a genuine milestone, the first Netscape-branded version of the open source Mozilla code that the company set free years ago.

Netscape 7.0 is available for download at www.netscape.com/browsers.

New features in Netscape 7.0 include:

A tabbed browsing interface that lets users keep track of multiple sites and pages simultaneously.

A so-called click-to-search feature that lets users click on any word on a Web page and open a search sidebar window without leaving that Web page.

Extra-speedy startup time.

Built-in instant messaging with an integrated AOL Instant Messenger client.

Integrated Netscape Mail, with features including click-to-search and new mail filters.

A new Radio@Netscape music/radio client, powered by Spinner.

I grabbed this and installed it on my desktop right away. Very nice and with a few conveniences that aren't in the mozilla build. (e.g. a button to open a new, empty tab so you don't have to hit the menu or the keyboard)
One irritation is that you can't filter out AIM in the custom install. I didn't want AIM, but I got AIM.... alas, at least its easy to turn off. Other than that, I like it. I'm still using Mozilla 1.1 as my main browser on my laptop, but on the desktop it will probably be increasingly netscape.
One thing that seems to be escaping a lot of the media at this point (I've only seen it mentioned a couple of times) is that if AOL decides to bundle Netscape 7 with their AOL service. That could mean approx 26.5 million "instant" Netscape users in the US alone. That would be an interesting turn of events indeed.

It's a great release. Too bad it doesn't skin properly though. PR1 and earlier Mozilla releases worked fine, but now, copy/paste (from URL) and the subject and URL fields are flaky when 7.0 final is skinned. Try entering a subject in a new message. Or, start NS in mail/news mode first, then launch the browser and try editing the URL. Sometimes it works, but most times it doesn't. Apparently the view on the Stardock newsgroups is that it's a Mozilla issue (which I agree, it sure seems to be). The chances of Moz/Netscape fixing this, or even knowing what broke it are probably zero to none, so unless something happens by chance in 7.01, I guess NS7 is destined to remain unskinnable.

I installed it today and it is a nice improvement on the series 6! It looks like you can use the mozilla skins with this new version of netscape. It has a lot of nice features and i'm glad the e-mail notification+sound is back again. It is really faster when loading websites than the older version and the start time is great, If you have the quicklaunch feature turned on!
I've also tried Netscape Radio and the sound quality is very impressive so far!

I can certainly recommend this new version to the general public. Enjoy.
