Modding weapons and effects

I am no stranger to graphics as I work in TV but I want to play around with modding this games weapons and effects but not sure where to start. Are there any tutorials about how to mod say the laser weapon for the TEC? Just knowing what files ill need to edit to change the characteristics of the laser will lay a road map for me on how to do everything else.

In general the weapon effects are defined in the particle files. In the downloads section there is a utility called the particle forge that should be useful. Also this tutorial might help.l
