How do you create a trade route?

Newbie question, I literally started playing today, how do you create a trade rout I have freighters, but I can't find anything in the manual telling me what to do.

Build a freighter, launch it, Send it to an alien planet, once it reaches there instant trade route. After that little bit its automaticly used until its cancled either by you or because it gets too dangerous.
