File Edit help

Hi All

I  am new to the boards and I wonderd if you could give me some help. I have noticed that a few people mention editing the galaxy file to increase starting credits/metal/crystal.

I have found the file i need to edit but when i do it will not allow me to save it.

I am using v 1.05 on Vista. Any ideas why it wont save.

Thanks in advance

well, first, grab a TXT/BIN converter off the forums. harpo's sins txt binner or the Dekhranic Mod Tool GUI 1.5.0.0. One thing is that you should also grab Impulse (it comes with Sins) and update to 1.17. Better graphics, and plenty of better things to play with in terms of better finished product (proper Advent SC meshes for one thing).

Now, you can try editing the .galaxy map files, but that's controlled by hexbits I THINK. And NEVER EDIT YOUR STANDARD GAME DIRECTORY. Make a mod that does it. Makes things MUCH easier, and you don't have to uninstall/reinstall Sins from disc if you mess up.

What I recommend is that instead of trying to edit the galaxy files, or trying to edit your save game files, make a new map in Galaxy Forge (you may want to grab harpo's map updater, search the forums for it), and simply edit each player's starting resources to the amount you want.

Also, MAKE SURE TO ASSIGN EACH PLAYER YOU PUT IN YOUR MAP (basically the max # of players the map can be played with) A HOMEWORLD!!!! Otherwise, if you set it to random start point, you may end up with a 'Defeat' screen, because you have no starting planet.

it is possible to edit the .galaxy files directly with notepad, but v***ta/w7 users will have to save in the user space galaxyforge folder(assuming 1.16+/entrenchment 1.02+) for earlier sins the .galaxy files NEED to be in the program files galaxy folder, so v***ta/w7 users have to save elsewhere then copy the file into the folder., and as whiskey suggested DO NOT save maps with the same name as an original map.

my map updater is to update maps from the old map formats to the latest format so that players can keep playing their favourite maps after a patch updates the map format(it has happened 3 times, but two of the format changes where minor , but the change to format 3 altered the planet and player codes for ALL players/planets in the map.

the txtbin converters are only needed if you want to mod copies of the game files to make your own mod.

if you want to make your own maps then the BEST tool for the job is GALAXY FORGE from the downloads page, the only significant problem is in the templates area being unable to set up independent colonies without editing the galaxy template in notepad, but other than that single niggle you can make a map that is as hard or easy as you want

When you say you cannot open it, does that mean you have opened it but it won't let you save it? That sounds like a vista permissions issue. By default everything is read only, and make sure you give yourself permission to edit the file (even as an admistrator I had this issue, even though an adiministrator can change the properties anyways! Stupid vista, makes no sense). If not, follow the other guys advice.
