Cambridge Comments From The President

Cambridge Comments From The President

Added Fuel To The Fire

So what do you think about the Cambridge fiasco? Was this way overblown or what?  How about Obama's reaction?  Did you think his comments last night were divisive?   Should he have commented at all?  Some say he made a huge blunder in his getting involved, especially since he didn't have all the facts.

By now everyone's heard the story about Professor Gates who was arrested for disorderly conduct and resisting an officer who was called to the scene of an alleged break in of a house in an upper middle class neighborhood.

Is this a case of racial discrimination?   Reverse racial discrimination?  Pride?

Well I guess it depends on who you speak to.

This morning in our bible study we talked about racial prejudices.  Only, in this case, it had to do with the Samaritans and the Jews.  Most people know the story of the Good Samaritan and how he did something very noble in caring for his down and out, left for dead, Jewish enemy.

Many don't know the intense hatred they had for one another.  The Jews hated the Samaritans because they were half breeds.  While held in captivity the Northern tribe of Jews married Assyrians so their offspring were half Jew and half Assyrian so they developed the name Samaritans because of where they came from. Samaria was the capitol of the area that this all took place.  The other Jews, who came from the Southern Tribe and exiled into another area, managed to stay pure and thus began the great racial hatred between these two groups.

So today we studied Jesus' interaction with a Samaritan woman at the well in her city.  The Jews would go to great lengths to avoid Samaria even if that meant taking a longer trip which they gladly did to stay clean.  They felt even walking near to the city of Samaria they would be defiled.  So great was their hatred.  But Jesus, a Jew, on his way to Cana took the most obvious and short route; straight thru Samaria.  What was he thinking?

Jesus, the great peacemaker that he is, shattered all barriers.  Not only did he have a lengthy conversation with a woman, which was unheard of in His day, but she was a Samaritan outcast as well.  She was a woman of ill repute living with a man after having five husbands.   He asked her for a drink of water.  To drink from her utensils would certainly be taboo.  A Jewish man asking a woman of ill repute, and a Samaritan to boot,  for water?  Was he crazy?

By the time Jesus was done with Samaria and the Jews, they reconciled through him.  The last thing Jesus said before he left was to preach his word throughout the world, Jerusalem, Judah, and Samaria.

President Obama would do well to learn a lesson about racial descrimination from Jesus.  Martin Luther King got it.  He understood.  President Reagan got it.   It's about shattering those barriers, not putting them back up.

I'm afraid Obama's statement did more to stir the pot than to bring healing to a racially charged incident.

the samaritans are, at this moment, very rapidly about to disappear into the past. it's a race between them and a few remnant original nation populations in amazonia.

like you asked me for backup..now I'm asking you...do you have anything on this I can read.  I'm not aware of this.

I commend the woman who called the police.  She honestly thought that somebody was breaking into this house.  She did the right thing.  Most people don't want to get involved these days.

I've heard nothing about luggage being an issue.  All I've heard from the reports was the men were wearing backpacks.  Nothing about luggage.  Even so, the luggage could have been in his car.

The 'white woman' did what I would hope one of my neighbors would do if they thought a break-in was occurring at my home.

End of quote

She won't do it any more if you are black and so is the person she sees trying to force your door.

According to CNN, the caller never mentioned anything regarding race; that's good to know. I find myself further favoring her in this whole deal.

According to all the news Lucas.  I heard the tapes in full on Fox.  She never mentioned race at all; only two men whose backs were to her from a distance.  Then after this all broke she was getting threats for being a racist when in fact there's absolutely no evidence of that.

Makes that "white woman" comment from Gates show who the real racist really is doesn't it?  Total reversal going on here.

I love it, and it doesn't happen often, when the truth immediately appears and sheds bright light on a particular subject.

It's also interesting that the "white woman" isn't going to sue Gates for making a racist remark against her (and making her life hell for a few days)  like he was going to sue the "white" cop for being racist against him.

That was the first I had heard of it. Then again I haven't been reading much news lately due to being in a cynically sour disposition.

This is not true.  The lady did say that she thought one looked "Hispanic" according to the 911 call.

However this isn't profiling at all, this was merely describing the best she can of the potential criminals she believed were breaking into the back door of the house.

Gates can try but he will fail.  In the link above you'll see a fellow black officer in the picture who also came out supporting Officer Crowley.

The more we learn about Gates the more we see why Obama came out in support of him.  This was a public favor Obama's associates.  However this one is going to burn Obama for speaking out.  Gates is certainly a racist and speaks similar rhetoric against 'whites' as many of those Obama has surrounded himself over the years.

I hope Obama finds this a learning moment that people are not inherently racist and that HE HIMSELF (oh great one) has some racial issues to 'learn' from.

The outcome of this will be interesting.

well, I think that is what they are trying to do by having them come to the White House.  Obama keeps shooting himself in the foot and I like it. :)

Mmm, for some reason when I read about this, I keep thinking of when Hoover (I think it was hoover) sent the militia to settle the despute between the miners and company in...wv?

In this case, it's for the right reasons.  Too often, 'supporting their own' means in spite of the facts.

googling "samaritans" provides links to a lotta info about the people, their history, culture and current status of all those.

just a tiny taste from wikidpedia:

n the past, the Samaritans are believed to have numbered several hundred thousand, but persecution and assimilation have reduced their numbers drastically. A 1919 illustrated National Geographic report on the community stated that their numbers were fewer than 150.

Samaritan and the Samaritan Torah

As of November 1, 2007, there were 712[1] Samaritans half of whom reside in their modern homes at Kiryat Luza on Mount Gerizim, which is sacred to them, and the rest in the city of Holon, just outside Tel Aviv.[6][24] There are also four Samaritan families residing in Binyamina, Giv'at Ada, Matan and Ashxddd.

be sure not to miss the section on dna and geneology.

also--and i'll be first to admit my memory is receding into the morass at an appallingly increasing velocity--i seem to recall reading something leauki posted about the samaritans.  if that is accurate, perhaps he can be persuaded to point you in that direction.

You know that's pretty interesting Kingbee.   Thank you.   I'll look into this further later.  I'm getting ready to take a trip...be back in a week.   I'm still studying the woman at the well and the implications as a result (John 4).  Pretty interesting.

The reason I say this is because the 10 Northern Tribes were exiled to Assyria and the source of these Samaritans by intermarrying while the Southern tribe of only 2 tribes were exiled into Babylon and did not intermarry like the northern tribes.  Yet, look at the Jews and how God preserved them perfectly even tho they were almost annihilated by Hitler and many others over the years.   They were left for dead as a Nation more than once and what we see today is nothing short of miraculous when we look at them.

This is one of those proofs that I look at when I think about God and his revealed word.  He said they would be preserved as a nation until the end and that's exactly what we see even though they were the minority all the time.    This goes all the way back to the Abrahamic promise.  They are still flourishing today and God says will be there right up to the end when he comes back.

Amazing when you think of how many times Israel was a pall bearer in their enemies funerals.

i misread this on first glance as "hoover you mouse..." and became concerned for both our sakes before realizing i should reconsider voluntarily signing myself in for a few days of observation.  gotta admit it's good to know there are others who appreciate and utilize the entertainment value potential of them link alt tags.

barbour is one of several governors (all republicans, four from southern states of which three--missippi, louisiana and south carolina--are hardly economic powerhouses even in the best of times and whose citizens' only advantage nowdays is having had a lotta practice living on less) who refused this years stimulus funds?  i'm not even gonna speculate as to their motivation altho i don't recall them having any problems with funds allocated to everyone but their states' most financially disadvantaged and vulnerable residents.

of course  'none dare call it propaganda'*

thanks to google street view, one may meander up and down one-block-long ware st in cambridge, ma.  by doing so, they may grasp the point i was trying to make.  i believe gates' home is located at 16 or 18 ware st.  either way, it's one of perhaps 3 so-called single family residences on a street otherwise comprised of mult-unit buildings.

just as ya gotta have a lotta time on your hands and not much of a life to keep track of apartment dwellers or even condo owners/occupants, with the possible exception of a boo radley, residents of those three handsome homes gotta be invisible or live most of their lives elsewhere to escape notice by al but their terminally oblivious neighbors.

furthermore, if gates has occupied that location for any period of time, it's difficult for me to understand how and why local law enforcement personnel who police that relatively small community had no clue bout who lives in gates' house.   lapd has fewer officers on patrol than most places other than mayberry but those who patrol the same sectors seem uncannily able to distinguish between local home owners and the rest of us.

I'm more suprised that NEIGHBORS don't know each other than the LAPD not knowing who lives in a house.  Well, not suprised.  Saddened.  I know my neighbors here.
