When the Pantheon is active there rarely are any skirmish games up. When Pantheon is not up, a fraction of the Pantheon players play Skirmish.

skirmish I see lots of 4v4 with 1 human and 7 ai, pantheon between 1-5 games active at any time, but very few people queuing these days...
That is because the easiest way to raise your ladder rank is to play custom games.
Out of the top 100 Ladder ranked players, 79 are also in the top 100 Custom Game Ranks. Only 10 of the top 100 Skirmish players are in the top 100 Ladder ranked players. While there is no cumulative rank for Pantheon matches we can infer that 11 of the top 100 Pantheon players are in the top 100 Ladder Ranked players.

@Zygwen(2), yes, sadly. I don't get why you would like good stats. I think of stats as the means to make good mathces of players with equal skill. I'd rather play a close game then get owned/own someone. I like this game, but my patience with basic-matchmaking is starting to run out.
TheLittleDonkey, i believe the system prioritizes getting a match started as soon as possible over ranking players around the same rank. It'd be nice, and it works somewhat with Halo 3's system but Halo has about 50,000 people playing at a given time whereas our pool of players is much smaller so its more difficult to make that happen.
Well skirmish and pantheon seem totally dead at the moment, well over 50% of my games has an AI in resulting in conceding, and when you do get matched its not anything to do with skill, just who happens to also be in the queue at that time, making matchmaking a big waste of time.
Customs are getting annoying now too because its always the same people playing, and also rage-quits / general lack of respect seem more common here.
Yes, With around 2000 people online at a given moment, match-making is hard as of now, but to me, none of those 2000 playing skirmish says something about how messed up the situation is. Many people like me (random casual players) are now forced to play customs against teams. I'm not saying teams are automatically better, but they have practically eliminated the risk of getting a early leaver, rage-quitter, or maniac on their team, which decided more games than anything else.
I realize that the system in pantheon and skirmish are far from ideal, but to get to play other than AI's, or getting games at all, we have to start playing it.
It used to show how many people were waiting, I think it's a bug that it doesn't currently. I'll try to see if I can get kryo to list acknowledge it on the offical unresolved issues list.
Demigod is a team game you play with people you know and not some random team game.... It was obvious from the first day that only premade team pantheon or skirmish would work in the long run. I still hear them talk about random functions for customs etc...
The other problem is that it just puts people into a game and does not wait for equally skilled people. With a proper ranking system at one point you would only play people that dont leave etc...
We need team automatch!
