error with mass upgrading

So i have two small size ship models. one is called patriot an the other is called patriot-m2. they are both exactly the same except 1 uses mass drivers the other uses lasers. the laser ship has 1 extra piece so it looks somewhat different. when i upgrade the mass driver ship it says there are blahh number of this ship and that is correct. then on the left it lists the patriot-m2 and scout as options for upgrading but not the patriot. this is very frustrating as it means i lose all my mass driver ships and end up with twice as many laser ships..how do i get this to work properly?

The mass upgrade system only allows you to upgrade one existing class of ship into another existing class of ship. If you wish to upgrade the mass driver version, you need to create a third design with a slightly different name (patriot mark 2 or something), then upgrade the original patriots into the new ship class.
