May God have mercy on his soul. This is probably the most damning statement I have ever used, and I’ve used it twice this month already. The first time is when I heard that Yasser Arafat was dead, and the second today when I was speaking about the hunter that killed five people over a hunting spot.
Sure, I use words and phrases I shouldn’t. I say God damn it when I stub my toe, or someone cuts me off in traffic. It’s a really bad habit that I need to stop. I never mean that I want God to actually damn someone. I also say fuck. Sometimes I’ll overuse it just for the comedy value. “I’m fucken really fucked off about this fucked up shit!” and then start laughing about what I was angry about.
But when I say “May God have mercy on his soul”, it’s for real. It’s like saying “May God have mercy on his soul, for I can not” or “May God have mercy on his soul because what he has done is unforgivable by man”. I am really sincere. I do really want God to show this person mercy. In part, it’s because I don’t wish eternal punishment on anyone. It’s also because I hope that if God can show mercy to one such as these, then he surely will show mercy to me when my turn comes.
I’m generally not one to judge. I like to find understanding wherever I can, and I have learned well that we all have our problems nobody is perfect. I even enjoy it that way, knowing that we all are human. It makes our strengths more glorious when we recognize our weaknesses. I guess that underneath the conservative façade, I’m really a bleeding heart liberal. But every once in a while, I am confronted with someone or something that I just can’t rationalize, I just can’t understand, and I find my ability to forgive stretched too thin. So, when I do, I say it. May God have mercy on his soul.
