WindowBlinds 7 - Beta 1 Available

For Object Desktop subscribers only

We at Stardock are excited to announce the availability of WindowBlinds 7 – Beta 1!  WindowBlinds is an application that allows Windows users to change the visual styles (skins) of Windows Vista, XP, and now, Windows 7.

This is the first release of WindowBlinds for Windows 7, and as of right now there are no “new” features added.  The main point of this release is to get WindowBlinds working on Windows 7, and then add the “pretty stuff” later in development.  I cannot stress this enough….this is an early beta and there are certain items that will not be skinned correctly at this time.

More info about the beta:

  • Windows 7 support
  • Compact start menus will not work
  • No semi-transparent backgrounds (for now)

Windows XP and Vista users will not notice any huge changes, this release is primarily about Windows 7.  This release requires Windows 7 Build 7100 RC.  Right now, the beta is available for Object Desktop subscribers via Impulse.  You can still get the beta by becoming a subscriber.  Visit www.objectdesktop.com for more information.

Just to give you an idea of what Windows 7 specific skins might look like, danilloOc is working on a Win7 skin that he has shared with us.

Woohoo! Finally! And that skin looks very nice. Time to see how it performs in Win7 and blog it. edit: Just installed it. Where's that skin danilloOc was working on? :o Yeah, I tried a skin that came installed w/ it and it didn't exactly look right. But hey, it's a beta! wheeeeeee! I'm guessing that skins will need to be designed around Win7 to be usable instead of using any ol' Vista skin, right? Hope we'll see a Win7 compatible skin soon!

i don't think that skin is anywhere to be found right now, which is a pitty, unless u use the taskbar at the bottom, it looks aweful, i have mine to the left

It shows in my Impulse but when I try to load it I get message "Your registration for this product is not valid". Yet I can update other products with no problem. How do I fix this?

depends on if your 'other products' includes an active ObjectDesktop subscription

I have an active O D subscription, have had for at least five years. I have Windowblinds 6 installed and most of the other O D apps. It just womt work for Wb 7.

leveck, has anythng changed with your account, like your email?  Make sure you have things set to get pre-release or beta products.   You should be seeing WB 7 as a seperate download under the My Software tab in Impulse.

If nothing has changed and your Object Desktop Subscription is current then I think you need to email [email protected] for assistance.  They should be able to get your problem corrected for you.

And what kind of skin would that be?

Why are the betas only available for OD subscribers? Does Stardock not trust the general public?

It's one of the incentives / perks of being an Object Desktop subscriber.

danilloOc,

I haven't seen a reg fix for getting rid of the Win 7 version stamp on the desktop that works...do you mind sharing how you did it?

Also OD subsribers are generally running most/all the betas available anyway so they're ready if something screws up and they tend to post issues as issues.

Not saying you fall into the majority pm41, but unfortunately the majority of the general public tends to get pissed when the beta doesn't work exactly as they think it should, they're not ready for it & don't know what to do next and they bitch and moan instead of being constructive.

I purchased windowblinds 6 and cannot install windowblinds 7 to get it to work on win7? I can register windowblinds 6 fine in Impulse but it tells me that I do not have the correct registration info for windowblinds7. Are you saying that I need to purchase a new license even though I purchased v6? thanks

there's only one page of posts. read, people.

IAmPas, I am asking this question again because I truly can't believe that would be Stardock's policy. At least give the people who purchased Windowblinds 6 a chance to try this as well until it gets out of beta, at which point I am willing to pay (will probably ask for a discount though). If this is how it works then I am sorry that I have to give up a great program. Bichur, I read the posts twice, I am not "fine print" blind. I am still asking Stardock whether they exclude people who own an active license for Windowblinds 6, because my personal opinion is that it's not OK.

the simple fact of the matter is people who have object desktop subscriptions get to use betas of applications such as windowblinds as a perk for purchasing the odnt sub. it's a selling point for odnt.....a rather good one, too.

your wanting purchasers of wb6 to have access to the wb7 beta is along the lines of my wanting certain suites and subscriber skins to be released in non-MyColors format........neither one is likely to happen.

That has been their policy since before I was a subscriber.

Yeah...I agree. More people than we realize use these kinds of programs. If Stardock just made all betas public, people would complain so much that the good criticism will be buried in a sea of complaints from people who don't know what the word "beta" means...

And then we have the "buccaneers" who will bittorrent anything (and think that cracking the app so many times that it'll make your head spin will actually fix bugs)...

I see why Stardock keeps so many betas closed now. I guess I'll just have to wait patiently... :)

But wait...How come apps like Fences get public betas?

IAmPas, this is clearly different from other software companies who give those who just purchased a full license of a software that doesn't run on a new OS anymore the chance to obtain a license of an updated version that will run fine on the new OS. It apparently doesn't matter, irrespective of whether I was an ODT customer for years until recently and now "only" own copies of OD and WB. If your voices express Stardock's stand then I take that as a NO, will shut up and wait until I have money again to purchase an ODT subscription. thanks

No it is not.

Not being able to try a beta version is not the same as not being allowed to buy WB7 - you will be able to buy/get it when it becomes available to the masses.

Unless the general rules that have been in place before either you or I got our numbers have changed ... if you own a version of WB, you can get WB 7 at a discount... if you recently bought wb 6 and fall within the time frames I have yet to see announced, you will get a free upgrade.

It works great for me in Win7. I used the Aero Metal skin and it skinned things really well. I didn't try any others at this point, as I don't use Win7 on a daily basis yet (too much to get setup again since its on a different partition). One thing I was surprised at was it didn't require a re-boot to use it. I'm used to even a tiny update from WB to require a re-boot to fully take affect. Its been awhile since I installed WB from scratch, so maybe its always been that way, but it took me by surprise. Looking forward to more ODNT programs to be updated for Win7.

one question it might be stuid to ask but is the skin from danilloOc available already :S My Feedback im running Wb7 on a random vista Extreme sys Not so good /maybee sytem problem i dunno is the long loading time like in early WB6 where the screen.e wasnt updated properly. Neat :Double or Huge taskbar works on top or bottom. Taskbar for the side should get a fix that the startmenue popup appears a bit more in the middle of the screen itself so you can still pick running tasks. Watermark could be removed we all know its beta :P tested skins : Prowler,Zing,Waterwalk,NoLoadLimit,Ecliz,Muku,Dreamland
