Here's my dirty little secret for getting points:

Very straight forward: I write about something that I'm interested in that I think others are interested as well. I then go to sites that cover what I have just written and email them letting them know about what I've just written about and some of them will then link to it.

Comments only give a couple of points. The real points is getting other sites to link to your articles.
