A few questions!

From a newbie.

Hey all, i recently got the Ultimate edition (updated to 2.01) of GalCiv2. So far i've played about 5 games and have been learning everything as i play or as i scan through these forums (which are quite helpful and there's a nice atmosphere here, quite cool.) I'm usually a quick learner, my latest game is on Painful, Large, 6 races and i've just finished everyone except 2 races off (i coerced these 2 into a war to keep them busy while i tidied up the rest of the galaxy :D)

Since i'm learning everything by doing, whatever i haven't done i don't really know. For example, ship defence. How does it work? If my ship has 5 defence and the attacker has 10 attack, is his attack limited to 5? I put some defence on my ships during a game (don't worry: it was the correct type of defence for my opponent's weapons) and i didn't really notice any damage reduction compared to the ships that had no defence. So i've been using ships that concentrate on attack and HP which seems to work well compared to the AI's ships.

Also the mega events. I leave them on for some added randomness, but i think the only one i've experienced is the Dread Lords. They came as i was on the verge of destroying the last enemy race in one of my game, so by this time my territory had spread to the far corners of the galaxy, yet i couldn't see them anywhere. After i destroyed the last race i didn't win the game immediately, it said the Dread Lords were still out there (so i assumed i had to finish them off to finish the game) but i couldn't find them anywhere, and all they did was send one transport ship (apparently, i didn't see it on my map until they invaded) and tried unsuccessfully to invade one of my planets. So do they have invisible ships or something? Cause if so, i want some of that shizzle! :P

I can't really think of anything else at the moment, but if i do i'll stop by again. Thanks in advance for any help :)

The name of the Dread Lord world is Amalda.  I have not had a problem seeing their icon on the galaxy map unless the planet was in a place I had not surveyed, or otherwise "seen" with ship sensors.

One way to find the Dread Lord planet if it is in sight and you just have not recognized it, is to go to the planet menu, select enemy, and look for Amalda.

If you have not used the planet menu, you get to that display by toggling (IIRC) the far left button on the bottom of the screen.  You will get a narrow vertical menu which allows you to see all your ships or all seen planets (you choose which by another icon toggle on the top right of that display).  In the planets choice (toggle the planet icon not the ship one), you can choose from "own", "enemy", and "unowned" - or something like that.  Choose the enemy or owned or whatever and look for Amalda.  You can also choose in that same place to list the planets alphabetically, by class, etc. on that vertical listing.

If Amalda is not on that list, then you have not "seen" it yet.  Send scouts, etc into the places that you have missed.  You can tell which areas are candidates by comparing the display you can see in the stellar cartography mini-display with the larger map.  That is, you can see which stars that have planets are those that you have not "seen" with ship sensors.
