New Game, Cant update?

Hey all, I just baught the game for my girlfriend and I and noticed when either of us started it, it wanted us to Update the game. We clicked on update and it just closes the game and goes to desktop and does nothing. Also since installation it hasnt wanted us to input the CD key at all. Is there some hidden step somewhere that we are missing? We also would like to play on the LAN together but there is no option for that. Any help would be great, thanks!
