3v3/4v4/5v5 with friends..

is it worth it?

I tried 3v3 DG with 2 friends tonight and we spent ~3 hours to play 2 games, one of which lasted about 5 minutes because of leavers.  It's just not a good experience because getting a game going often takes longer than playing the game when you are trying to play with a small group of friends.

And what is truly annoying is that we could be playing games much more easily if we just pirated the game, since 95% of the games on gameranger contain pirates and getting a 3v3 going on there proved to be pretty difficult.  I imagine a goal Stardock has is to make Demigod worth buying for pirates, but at this point its tempting to uninstall and just play an older version so we can get more games in less time on gameranger.

My friends are more exasperated with this than me.  We all really like the game, but as my brother puts it, he's not sure its worth the effort.  I'm confident it will be improved over time, but it hasn't improved much at all since the day after launch for me.  Still not so smooth.

is 5v5 with 5 friends even possible?  That'd be like climbing mount everest.

I play 3v3s with 2 of my friends all the time with no problems...

I'd say one out of every 3 games someone drops early on, but most of the time everything works fine...

2v2 --> easy to set up

3v3 --> fairly easy to set up

4v4 --> difficult to set up

5v5 --> almost impossilbe to set up

Well, you need to be really anal about pings when you set up a game.  If you see anyone climbing above 200, give them the boot.  Otherwise you are looking at lag and disconnects.  People will jump all over me for saying 200, but with 5v5, it's necessary.

I hear you about friends getting bummed out about getting games going.  I had the same experience in Left4Dead.  I loved the game and tried to get friends to play it.  The game kept putting us in verses nightmare mode (they later fixed it) and we would all die in 30 seconds.  This was after struggling to even get into the right lobby and fill the game up.  After a couple hours of this, they all went back to BF2. L4D eventually got straightened out (still a bad lobby system though) but by that time opinions had been set.

I also love Demigod, but have not yet encouraged my friends to buy it for this reason.  I know they will immediately discard it given the current technical issues.  They just want to game and there are enough games out there that they enjoy that struggle through something this frustrating is not worth the time.  When the 50% coupon comes out, I'll probably get one of them a copy and hope for the best.

Tried again tonight, couldn't even get a game together.  After one friend dropped out due to frustration we got a 2v2 going pretty quickly.  I'd say we tried for a good 30-40 minutes for that 3v3.  Even tried gameranger again, too bad there probably aren't 3 other legit players on there.  maybe 100+ pirates though.

Uh, it's not a shooter. You can play with ~250 ping with zero noticeable lag.

End of Melric's quote

Jumps all over Melric. I declare 'bullshit'. I've played 4v4's etc with up to 400 ping with no real problems. THIS IS NOT A SHOOTER you do not need 14 ping.

I'm not overly concerned with ping, I'm frustrated with not being able to even get into the lobby together most of the time.

I don't know a whole bunch about pings, but I got kicked out cause my was yellow; omg.  They don't even say "sorry" or anything, just kick you :annoyed:
