Demigod 'hanging' problem

Although I've been encountering the same connection problems as most users on the forums, when I have been able to find a game I'm disconnected after around 20 minutes of play time when the game 'hangs'. At first I thought the reason for the hang was because I disconnected and it was inputting A.I. players; the additional load caused my PC to 'hang' for several seconds. However, after playing a lot of Single Player, the same thing occurs apparently for no reason.

I'm running the following system:

  • Intel Core 2 Quad-Core Q6600 (2.4ghz)
  • 2.00gb of DDR2 RAM (800mhz I believe)
  • Windows Vista (32-bit) (currently up to date)
  • Geforce 8800GT (512mb)
  • Digital Download version of Demigod (purchased through Impulse) (currently up to date)

I've run Demigod both in and out of the 'Administrator' mode and with different kinds of compatability modes and makes no seeable difference. I've ensured NO other programs are running, and have even Alt+Tabbed out of Demigod and closed down Impulse once Demigod is loaded to make sure Demigod was the only program running on my PC. I have no performance problems of any kind and run Demigod at the highest settings. I've tried lowering my settings and it also appears to make no difference. I even disabled the automatic updates in both Impulse and Windows to ensure Demigod had my entire computer to itself, and still it hangs after around 20 minutes of play in both Single and Mutliplayer, regardless of Mode, Characters or level.

Now, the weird thing is it doesn't hang every game, although it is most games, however the settings or combination of settings seems to have no effect. One game on one setting it won't hang, and then on the next game - same settings - it will hang. It's making what little online play I've been able to get into impossible to finish and is really starting to make me not want to play the game.

Has anyone encountered, or is encountering, anything similar to this? If you've found a solution or even just a cause of this problem, please let me know.

One possible issue I could think of is an issue related to your videocard perhaps overheating if this happens after the computer has been on a while and like you say playing a bit. However a while ago a friend of mine had a similar issue and he fixed it by basically re-seating his videocard.

i.e. - Open your case, take the card out...clean it with compressed air if you have it get dust out of hte fan etc etc. Then put the card back in making sure its in secure and all. Yeah you may not get this on other games as perhaps they are not taxing the card as much. Just one possiblity for you to try.

Of course the other is you may have some corrupt file in the game files etc. So try a reinstall of the game.

I play several games that are fairly taxing, such as Supreme Commander, and they don't hang like Demigod. I'll certainly give the cleaning a try - however as I downloaded the game I'll just verify the install through Impulse instead of re-installing.

Thanks for the advice.

I verified the install, no problems, and I cleaned out my tower. I played a single player game last night, which stuffered from no hanging. I also stress tested my PC with a 5V5 Skirmish Game, and used FRAPS to get a decent look at my FPS and I seemed to move between around 35-60 depending on how far zoomed out I was, so it doesn't appear to be anything relating my hardware. I'm confused :(

My home network is very, very simple:

[PC] -->--> [SpeedTouch Modem] -->--> [Internet] -->--> [?]

My SpeedTouch has a setting for "Gaming" which I set up to forward the required ports and disabled UPnP as per The_Monks guide, which actually allowed me to connect to other peoples games.
