SP3 and Windows

Despite the system requirements for this game listing Service Pack 3 required, I gather this runs if you have Service Pack 2 installed? And you have to have an authentic copy of Windows to install or register the game?

And what of an authentic copy of windows XP? I don't really want to pay for the game then find I have to authenticate windows to get it to work - nothing else I have ever bought requires this, so I find it odd that this would be the case.
