You're Banned!: The Forum Game

Okay, here's what you do for this game: You have to "ban" the person who posted above you for an outrageous, silly, or funny reason. Got it?

banned for I have posted lore

banned for it only took you two and a half months...

Banned because I finished up that huge survey analysis I was doing. I'll post the results here after school- they're kind of interesting.

Banned because I'm going to conquer the universe and need less competition. How would you like to be millet farmers?

Banned because I'm back at work !

banned for good for you. Now sow that millet!

And interesting post Ryat... where was it taking place?
And does this mean we have a newly active Flames of Vengeance? Are you going to let your allies know of the day's activities?

banned for harassment :P

The military moon of Kyrene.

Possibly.

Why?

banned for do you ever get offline?

And was just wondering. I figure we're in the same game so it might be good to know where I might get an intel report from.

banned for I was off for about 7 hours

Spies, Rumors, Stant

They seem like good leads to help with that.

Banned for being off for seven hours. I can manage both longer and shorter durations.

Because I have skillz.

banned for bragging

for my next trick

10 hours or longer

banned for I did that once. Walked away with no skin left. Not a good idea.

Banned for being a carbon-based being ! Your species is so weird !

Banned because the survey was pretty simple. We asked people to estimate the number of military dead in the Iraq War, the number of civilian dead, and then we told them the real military number and asked them to do civilians again:

We got enormous understatements of civilian deaths and overstatements of military deaths from people, and when I administered the survey dressed as a soldier, I got even BIGGER numbers for military deaths and even smaller civilian numbers than when my friend administered it dressed as a hippie. I can post a graph with our actual numbers...

banned for you should also post a pic of your military/hippie duo.

Banned because I don't want to put my friend's image on the web w/o his consent. He's paranoid about that sort of thing.

Banned for lies, damned lies, and statistics.

banned for you can prove anything with statistics. 90% of all people know that.

And it doesn't surprise me at all. Btw, I understand your friend's feelings.

Banned because you can actually prove nothing with statistics. Since I am taking a simple of a population, I can only say with X% confidence that anything is true.

banned for statistics do have some point. If you had 115,200 people take the survey, you get about 95% accuracy, which is pretty good. That's assuming you want just the American population. The discrepancies between a military uniform and a hippie outfit are correlation, which does not prove cause and effect, but if the results are found to reproduce with fair consistency, then you have strong evidence for a theory. Proving anything is a bitch and a half, so the goal is not to necessarily prove as much as it is to demonstrate plausible trends. Looks like you did a good job though.

Banned because statistics yields much better information about non-verbal data than it does about verbal data. Estimating your body's white blood cell count from a small sample is one thing, putting great faith in opinion surveys is another. The methodology is fraught with weaknesses, from the push-poll problem to the likelihood that an unknown but possibly significant number of respondents give an answer even when they don't understand the question.

Banned because those are very good points, but they're also kind of what I was actually looking at. I know the real casualty numbers, but I want to measure American ignorance about those numbers. I wouldn't take this survey seriously, though, because the sample size is small, but it certainly suggests something is up. I would very much like to investigate further into this, with larger sample sizes, opinion and factual questions, and different costumes (street clothes, suit and tie, girl in a headscarf).

banned for everything has its strengths and weaknesses. You just have to take everything with a hint of cynicism.

Banned for thinking everything needs the same something. Variety is the spice of spices.

banned for making my head hurt with excessive pontification about statistics
