Will Both-Sex Partners Trump Same-Sex Marriages?

Fishy Fish Spawn New Wedge Issue

biologists in colorado who take to that state's rivers every fall to check on the health of the fish living in them--using an electronic device to temporarily stun their subjects in order to collect samples--were shocked themselves to discover  populations of male fish with female sexual tissue in three different stream systems..

"I've done a lot of studies throughout my career which extends back to 1973," recalled researcher, john woodling. “This is the very first time that what I've found scared me."

in boulder creek,  female white suckers outnumbered males five to one; half the males  had female sex tissue.

all the fishy fish were found downstream from sewage treatment plants in water with abnormally high levels of the female hormone estrogen.  estrogen is a common constituent of 'used' water but is not easily removed during the treatment process.  the problem is excaberated by man-made chemicals in detergents, paints etc. that mimic estrogen.

"We're concerned about the effect on aquatic life, but we're also concerned about our ability to actually treat for these estrogens and estrogen mimickers," says barbara biggs, representing denver's largest treatment plant.

estrogen mimics--known as nonylphenols--are suspected of causing  kidney, eye, liver and reproductive problems and have been banned in europe.  canada is currently considering a ban as well.   researchers in the us have found natural estrogens and estrogen mimics in 80 percent of streams tested throughout 30 states.

here's where a little prophesy is in order.

the evangelical moral values movement which so vigorously fights same-sex marriage is equally adamant in its opposition to environmental regulation.  the basis for their position is twofold: literal interpretation of passages in genesis in which man is given dominion over the beasts of the earth and fishes of the sea as well as the green light to harvest and consume earth's resources... and their belief our world will soon come to an end obviating any need for conservation.  man's efforts to interfere with natural processes, in this world view, evidences a unhealthy lack of faith.

should the end times be a bit further in the future than anticipated, we may find ourselves conflicted over two more wedge issues:  both-sex partners as well as same-sex marriages...and what to do with those "fish" symbol car ornaments and bumperstickers.

It has been shown that when there are too many of one sex of oysters, the majority sex will change their gender!  Now that is nice for Oysters and Fish, but I doubt it will translate to higher life forms.  it is just Mother nature having a laugh.  As I did with this one!

Besides, with the life a fish leads, do you deny them the joy of - you know - uh - themself?

a number of invertebrates have the potential to shift sexes as a species survival mechanism (some--worms come to mind immediately--are hermaphodites).  i know of one fish species that goes from male to female as it grows older...there are probably others.  there's considerable evidence that high levels of estrogen in poultry feed have already lowered the age at which human children begin puberty.

on the other hand, as you say, it may turn out to be nothing more than an amusing anomaly.  i hope so...and im glad you gotta laff outta it in any event.

I'm sure I read someplace that all embryos (sp?)start out female. The ones that end up male do so because they got a big dose of testosterone later on..I seriously doubt that's relevant but I thought it was interesting anyway... I've heard of instances of babies being born with both male and female genitalia, though they are very rare ( ie you have to be a loser like me and watch the discovery channel all night) .

hehe- I blame you entirely for the coffee dripping of my monitor, Kingbee.

Not quite. It starts out pretty much sexless. Genes and stuff like testosterone or estrogen makes the changes to certain sex. Sometimes there's some mess-ups so there's some ambiguous sex people.

the initial determinate is chromosonal.  males have xy chromosones; females have xx.  but until the 6th week of development, the embryo is essentially bipotential (in other words, structurally it can develop either male or female internal and external organs).  a small genetic sequence on the y chromosone ('sry' gene) is believed to be the 'switch" responsible for testicular development in concert with other genes that begin the production of testosterone.  in the absence of testosterone, a male embryo would still be male but would be born with ambigous genitalia.  so yall are both right sorta.  the embryo is essentially female but potentially male.

This is great, wait til this spreads up the food chain and we can get rid of all this gay rights and gender discrimination, everyone will be a hermaphrodite

there's always a silver lining...or at least a lining

Wow that would kill of all discrimination of sex AND increase "sexual tension" very much since everyone is potential mates.

think about all the other benefits were losing out on cuz our technology is too efficient...
