please don't blame me for the spam

I am receiving a lot of comments regarding the spammer, so I want to clear something up. I am doing my best to manage it, but it's not easy. There is a limit to what I can control. To be honest, I'm also becoming distressed about being constantly asked to change my blogs to 'no anonymous comments' or to 'delete the spam'.

These are old blogs. They show up on my post list in the forum view. Comments CANNOT be deleted from this view, and the time required to change views, scroll through pages of blogs to get the relevant one, enter it and delete a comment is more than I have, I'm sorry.

Additionally, I have over 300 blogs. So the suggestion that I 'ban anonymous posters' doesn't work either. Old blogs have to be manually edited ONE BY ONE to change this. I spent 4 hours doing last week. (I managed to change about 130 articles in this time, and it made little difference to the spammer - it just hit the ones I didn't get time to do).

I blacklist the thing every day, and I've also clicked on 'its' username (irishnyberg) and blacklisted that. I’ve reported it in the ‘forum bug reports’, and Karma has kindly been active in fitting in deleting what she can for me amongst her admin tasks.

I would ask that if anybody has a suggestion on something I might have missed, can they please let me know. But in the meantime, I just don't have the time or the inclination to spend countless hours trying to get rid of its trail of shit when it will just happen again.

So, whilst I sincerely apologise to those who have had been subjected to it, I'd like to make it plain that I am actually distressed by this thing and I am genuinely trying to keep it in check. My blog means a lot to me, and I'd be most appreciative if people could just ignore this thing. I'm going to.

I'm sorry this is happening to my mig. It sucks. If it makes you feel any better, I like reading the stuff of yours I missed from before I got here when it pops back up due to spamming.

Im with Texas.. even though the spammer is hitting me too.. but hey sometimes the re runs of articles are better the second time around.. Dont stress too much Migs.

I feel bad that you are such a lightning rod for it though Mig... and if I was receiving as much of it as you are, I'd be getting quite irate about it too... I do get spammed lightly... but you've taken the amount you've gotten with a good deal of grace, and that is very admirable.

Vanessa, I agree with Kingbee; it's great to see some of your earlier stuff being reposted. Everyone seems to be getting spammed, but it's unfortunate that you're getting the worst of it. Chin up, friend.

I don't blame you at all. I have only half the blogs you have and I know that I don't want to go back and change anything. I like letting anon's post on my threads, because my family and friends back home don't necessarily want to register just to let me know they are reading my stuff. I do feel for you.

I still maintain, though, that the silver lining is that I get to read stuff that you (and some others now) wrote before I came to JU. I will say this, though, I don't know if they hit your I want to go to a funeral post yet, or not, but if they haven't, they better not! I'll start channeling greywar if that one gets spammed! That's my favorite JU article I've read the entire time here and the only bumps it gets are the bumps of true reader appreciation!!! I'm off to bump it now...

thankyou so much, citahellion. it was becoming so unbearable that i didn't even want to open my posts, and i was so worried that everyone else felt the same about my blog. it seemed the only comments i was getting were about the spammer and not the article.

i know you were just kidding me, citahellion, but it's a wonder i don't !. i got so obsessed with stopping it that i sat there for 4 hours straight 'spamproofing' one night last week. i thought at least if i could do every 2nd article it would lessen the chances by half. that will teach me !. it did nothing except give me a sleepless night because i sat up so late and was so angry trying to 'protect' my blog. AND it spammed me while i was doing it !!!.


so, you see, i am very pleased to have people know just how much my blog means to me, and to help me ignore the rotten thing. thankyou

There was a recent spamming on someone's blog (I honestly don't remember whose) that made me think that the spamming wasn't random. Either way, the perpetrator has WAY too much time on their hands and needs to move on.

You on the other hand, Mig, need to not worry. Let the jerks play their little game--eventually they will get bored!

I find it ironic the blogs of yours he chooses to spam and the things he spams with. It was just plain wrong to spam your heartfelt blog about suicide but it worked out because shades and I had missed it at the time.

shades, i can't imagine why anybody would want to go through this. i was so upset yesterday when a friend told me on the phone that it had spammed an old article i felt very strongly about, i got obsessed with it all over again and tried to trace it on the net.

i actually got 'its' IP address, and when i looked into it, all i could find was page after page of references to online drugs and stuff. i emailed the IP address to brad (although i felt silly doing so, as i know brad already knows, but i am as IT-savvy as a housebrick, so instead of having another public 'whine' about it, i left it at that). i think brad is even getting spammed now. it's not hitting just ju, either. it's an almost every forum, message board, and blogsite i looked at, and nobody is able to control it, as far as i can see.

i was so boiling with impotent rage that i emailed every company i could find that 'it' represented or 'advertised' products for and told them exactly what i thought of their 'innovative marketing technique' in no uncertain terms. i can't believe that a company could be happy to be represented in this way. i bet they trace which ad-link got clicked on or something and the jerkoff gets commission or some shit.

anyway, they have not heard the last of me. i'm fugging mad now !

I was only half kidding, I remember you mentioning once before that you spent 4 straight hours on it, and that's (a) way too much time doing the same thing over and over, and (b) way too unproductive when you could have been gardening or cranking out more delightful articles or posts.

citahellion, thank you so much . i have officially given up trying to 'block' old articles and i do feel much better. i'm still trying to get rid of it as i find it, but yes, i shall spend some time writing instead of making futile efforts to 'save' my blog now
