Asteroid fields and capturing metal extractors

I'm new to Sins of a Solar Empire and I've played a couple of 1v1 games against the computer and have managed to figure out many of the basic elements of gameplay. However, some asteroid fields and other locations have asteroids and metal extractors but aren't colonizable. The extractors say they are invulnerable, but they can be captured. But I have been unable to find any way to capture them.

I feel certain that it must be a simple thing that I'm over looking, but it has me stumped. If anyone would be willing to shed some light on this for me, I would certainly appreciated it.

The TEC and Advent have abilities to capture these on their colony frigates, and the Vasari use their scouts. ;)

It depends on your race.  If you are Advent or TEC then you can capture what are known as neutral extractors with the race specific colony ship.  The frigate (not Cap ship) that is able to colonise worlds.

The Vasari have a slight advantage in this department as they are able to use their scout ships to capture the neutral extractors.

You can still capture an extractor that has been captured by another player.

And the AI now actively captures those too, so you need to watch after them. Another special feature is that they support 4 refineries insted of 3, so they can be quite valuable.

Speaking of neutral extractors...the AI in Entrenchment commit a surprising amount to capturing those. They go so far as to send their fleet there to take care of matters. I end up putting Starbases there to protect the extractors *_* . The AI comes in with a large fleet and tries to blow it up. This forces me to send my fleet there to reinforce the Starbase   . I find it funny that there are quite some epic battles over a simple asteroid field.

They are also still not affected by allegiance penalties for being away from your homeworld, I believe, which means a captured mine can make more than 2-3 mines at a 35% allegiance planet.

Its well worth the fact that its extraction rate is the same as a built extractor at 133% alleigance.

Thanks to everyone that replied. The information is greatly appreciated.

I foolishly kept trying to capture them with warships and no matter how many capital ships I sent at them... they kept sneering at me.
