Precursor Ranger Porcupine Hummingbird Death Ship

I was playing an awesome game in TA... I had the most powerful empire, and was allied with the 2nd most powerful Arceans. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, came this porcupine-looking Yor ship that started ripping my planentary fleets to pieces. I said to myself, "What's that thing?"

It was a Precursor Ranger with 150 Hit Points. So I created a fleet of battleships with about 350 combined Hit Points and attacked the planet where the Ranger was based. It decimated my fleet. In fact it decimated two such fleets in short order. I managed to reduce its HP to about 60. But I could not destroy the ship. I went from being the most powerful to second most powerful very quickly.

Are these things practically indestructible when orbiting a planet or what? I haven't been able to catch it in space because it is too quick.

Well, they have a fairly high base attack value, and being in orbit provides a 25% bonus to attack, so, yeah, they're not easy to take out.

The TA rangers are stronger than the DL/DA rangers, as well.

You do know hitpoints mean nothing, right?  It's pretty much all attack/defense.

To kill it, you'd probably need a single ship with ~250 attack, although as low as ~175 with a spread of defenses might work fairly well.

Rangers don't show up for the first several game years, though, so by the time they do, you should really have the tech to defeat them.

Ok - I faced a similar problem.  Fairly early in the tech tree, the Yor found a Precursor ranger.  Same situation - 150hp, and >100 in each attack category.  Totally unstoppable.  I couldn't figure out what to do.  I just kept making peace with them at great cost.

Then, one turn, I noticed that the Precursor ship was now Grey - it was now under control of the Drath Legion!  What?  Then the penny dropped.  For a bunch of crappy tech (scatter blaster 1, soil enhancement, and a bunch of other stuff that was no big deal), and about 700 bucks, I _bought_ the precursor ship off the Drath.

Not for long!

Here comes the DreadLords... and their Large invincible gimmicks.

It's not the precursor, it's who and how something specifically built can match it before the situation becomes hopeless. :borg:
