Too Many Babies

I know many of you have heard about the family that just gave birth to Octuplets.  I am interested to hear what people think about this.  Not only do they now have 8 tiny newborns to care for (which is impossible in my mind), they already have 6 (yeah, that's right, 6) children at home!

Here are my thoughts.  First off, who has 6 children and then gets IVF for more?!  What kind of doctor implants 8 embryos at a time?!  8 babies in the NICU, how many millions of dollars is that costing?!

I just don't get it!  I know, to each their own.  Maybe this couple wanted nothing more to life than caring for babies and having others help them raise their kids.  They felt selective reduction (clean name for aborting some of the fetuses) would be going against God but obviously thought that questioning whether God giving them ONLY 6 children was enough was okay.

I totally can't relate.  I love babies and children as much as anyone.  I can't imagine having so many that there simply is no way possible that the mom and dad could care for them themselves.

After having my first I experienced two miscarriages.  I figured maybe I would never have another baby but I was blessed to have one very healthy child.  Who could really ask for more?  Afterall, look at how many can't even have that.

That's just my opinion.  What's yours?

My opinion is pretty close to yours.

I can see having 14 children but not like this.  I'm all for having big families. The bigger the better as long as you can take care of them without government help and conceive them naturally.  But to have six already and then be implanted with another 8 is totally inappropriate in my book.

I have three children and have had one miscarriage.  My regret now is that I didn't have more kids to raise properly and send them out into the world with the thought of making our world a better place.  Looking back I would have had more but I think I panicked when I had three in three years and a miscarriage the next year so I quit.  I was only 25 when I made that decision.

Should have gone for the girl!!

I think as long as someone is financially able to take care of them, so be it.  However, if we (meaning taxpayers) will have to foot the bill in welfare and food stamps, then I have a serious problem with it.

I just learned that the mom is single and lives with her parents.  I can't imagine that!

I guess I would be the most 'expert' of our resident JU'ers on this particular topic.

I haven't seen a confirmation that these babies were IVF. It's more likely that they were Clomid babies. In the IVF world, one baby is a success and two babies are still considered a successful situation. Three babies is a failure statistically for the doctors. I'm not saying it couldn't be IVF (it could but the implant number would be smaller than eight and there would be some identicals in there) but you would be hard pressed to find a doc that would implant even four embryos in a woman who already had six kids. Fertility doctors are not that irresponsible or reckless. If my wife and I choose to go through the process again our doctor has a two embryo limit.

We went though three failed IVF attempts before our fourth success. We had to fight to get our doc to implant four. When all four started developing he was gravely concerned. We lost one somewhere in the 9th-12th weeks.  We were all but strong armed to see a reduction specialist even after we lost one.

There is so much we do not know and the media seems all up in arms since she already had six children. What if there isn't a father that is around? Honestly, it's none of my business. You can be mad at her because the taxpayers are likely to foot the bill for her and her children but remember she is the exception. The rule is the welfare mother who pops out another kid because her check isn't 'fat' enough to support her habits anymore.

I don't care how many kids she has if she can pay for them all. On the other hand, if she's on public assistance, she should have been spade before having 8 more kids..

Better her than me.

They didn't even spot the 8th one on the ultrasound... must have been the runt of the litter. :D

John, from my understanding, doctors use two or sometimes three eggs (Some just one) in this process. Eight seems like over kill to me.

The cast as I heard reported is $2.5 million to provide "just the basics" for these children (not including the other 6). Some how living single with her parents doesn't leave me with confidence that she has that kind of money. I guess she is expecting Ty Pennington to come build her a home, and Gerber to feed them. That's all well and good but I think the taxpayer is going to get part of the bill.

What bothers me is not her decision to keep them all (she did risk her live and all of the babies in the process though). It's the fact that she already has 6 children. Married or not that's plenty in this day and age. If she is living with her parents one would assume she can't afford those. I think there is a mental condition at work here, sadly. The only other thing possible is greed, if she thinks she can cash in on her kids.

It really appears that nobody read about this before posting.

Here's a good link:  http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/4413804/Mother-of-octuplets-had-all-her-14-children-by-IVF.html

So- she's divorced.  ALL of her kids were through IVF.  The last eight were AFTER the divorce and while living with her parents and living on WELFARE.

Now, how did she get the money for IVF?

Now she will have 14 kids on welfare and her poor Dad is now going back to work in IRAQ to be a translator to help support all these kids.

There is no way that I can see this as a good situation for anyone involved, and it's ridiculous that taxpayers are now paying for IVF babies that were conceived AFTER this lady went on welfare.

What kind of attention will these poor kids get?  She has 6 kids that are already fighting for attention from a single Mom.  What will their lives be like now that she has a new litter to take care of?

Humans don't naturally have that many kids.  We're not equipped to take care of them.  If we were- we'd have rows of nipples like dogs.  If she wants to talk about listening to God, she shouldn't have ignored him and had a litter.

I just can't figure out how people can do things like that.

I can't either, that's why I posted this.   I heard she plans on breast feeding and getting donor breast milk...that's a whole other debate!

So she's on welfare. And welfare paid for her to have IVF.

That is the logical conclusion when only a tiny % of the population are paying meaningful taxes, people don't care how the money is spent.

Now there is a rumor that the mother is trying to sell her story. I'm not sure if it's true or not (if so it makes me sick). If it were up to me she'd get nothing and if she didn't take care of the kids properly, I'd have them removed from the home and her locked up, since the taxpayers are going to wind up paying anyway. Why so cruel you ask? Simple, to discourage anybody else from gaining a windfall profit from their children.

Nitro, I heard that too.  I heard she wants $2M for pictures.  I think it's fishy that the Dr remains unnamed.

You want to hear something funny that I heard on the news?  Her Mom told her that she wouldn't be there when she got home with the 8 kids.  She was barely keeping it together helping with the 6, but now she wants nothing to do with helping take care of all of them.

I'm sure Extreme Makeover will build her a house and her community will buy diapers and her church will volunteer.  Ack.

I dunno.  Looks like no companies want anything to do with her, only tv and possibly a book deal....

This article also says she worked at a Mental Hospital until 2008.

Oh the irony.

I've read that families on the extreme makeover home edition in a significant number of cases end up losing their house later because of inability to pay the required taxes on the house.  Which really makes the show seem alot less "feel-good" than it initially is.

(though in this case, i don't think she deserves a new house because of the situation that she had total control over and still put herself in)

I just feel really bad for the kids.  I heard her spokeswoman saying how she would "clear the record" (she said that a million times!) once she recuperated from childbirth.  I can't imagine anything she could say that would make it make any more sense.  I heard her mother said she was obsessed with having kids.  Her spokeswoman said she just wants to be the best mom ever.  I think parenting is about quality not quantity and I don't know how anyone could possibly properly parent 14 kids under the age of 8!
