How can I design my own ships? Appearance, like colony ships

Dear readers, I am at a loss on a certain oddity in Galciv II Dark Avatar. When I access "New Game" then when I come to the design your own civ page, I find a button under the appearance page that shows a "Create ship design" button (under the ship styles selection). It appears to me as if the button is useless because its grey indicating its unusable. I was curious if this was to design all of the base ships in a civ that you design yourself. Straight to the question, What is this?

The purpose of the custom ship style button is to put together a package of templates out of those you've created, so you can tell the AI which designs to use as a base for its ships (you'll note that it is available only when customizing an opponent); it's not actaully intended to apply to the player's ships. If you'd like to adapt it for player use, there is a stickied thread on the subject over in the modding category of the forums.
