Tweaking settings for better gameplay

I know that I am not the only one who has expressed dissatisfaction with the depth of gameplay. I just thought i would try to start a post in which we could discuss changes in settings and how they affect gameplay for better or worse.

One of the biggest problems I had with the game was that it lasted too long and seemed to be a stalemate for most of the match until cats came out. I tried playing with grunt strenth maxed out, tower strength on weak, and demigod respawn time on draconic. I finished the game in 14 minutes before cats came out and it felt much more like my actions affected the game because if i died a long respawn time allowed the oppenent to make a push and gain advantage which forced more team work as well. Also the stronger grunts made it so they werent just xp fodder and forced me to play much smarter in the early game. Overall i enjoyed the game alot more this way and felt it had more depth.

I just want to see if other people will try these settings out and let me know what they think as well as trying out other tweaks and posting their thoughts on those. My hopes are to find a way where these settings are optmized for fun and competetive depth so we can help with balancing issues of basic gameplay functions.

Those are the settings I have been playing with. Mostly because they resemble DotA the most :P

But ya these setting lead to the more depth kinda but I really like how the Devs allow us to change specifics of different categories. I think they should expand on this. In DotA all we have is Easy mode and regular mode where easy more gives you more gold and makes towers easier to kill and do less damage but nice to see what can speifically set what we want

I've been playing some games without fog of war, spawn rate, war increase rate, gold income rate, experience rate and gold at start all set to the fastest / biggest. Games quickly explode into those crazy fights where you can't really see anything. A full game takes about 15 minutes.

This is true, but as a competitive player you must know it's important to have a specific standard ruleset.  If they are going to have a sort of ranked automatch ladder (I'd be apalled if they didn't) then they'll have to have one standard ruleset for automatch ladder games.

So if towers weak / grunts strong / hero penalty draconic adds more depth to the standard gameplay, then the developers should look into making something like that standard.

Personally I've noticed that although games last a long time, the pace of moment to moment gameplay is perhaps a little bit too fast.  But if grunts are made stronger then that might not be as big of an issue anymore.  I just feel like Demigods shouldn't be slaughtering grunts en masse from the very start of the game.  And killing another Demigod should not be a fast process unless you gang up on them with your team.

exactly, my hope is to find the best settings and have those get changed to standard settings, and I agree with your assessment on Demigods.

We'll definitely be looking at tweaking the standard settings as the balance is worked on. Stalemates are definitely a concern and my top priority for squashing.

Currently on our internal builds the following changes are present:

  1. Reinforcements are stronger.
  2. Less reinforcements are on the battlefield at the start of the game.
  3. Minions start weaker but get tougher over time. They also cost more.
  4. Death penalty is stronger.
  5. Items are spread better through the entire level range and cost more.

My goal is for games to take in the 15-30 minute range.

Thanks for all the feedback!

On death penalty, more down time is fine, but I would prefer if the game avoided gold loss entirely.  Gold loss was a poor mechanic in DotA and other similar games.

I agree and have no plans of implementing it in Demigod. It is however worthy of note that you do not earn gold while dead, either from gold mines, the Citadel or assist kills.
