Transports?

After doing several searches in various places I can't find any information about the Transport ships.  I have option to build them and it says little else except they transport people to distant places.  Do they travel a route like a Freighter?  Are they cruise ships?  Or are they for transfering populations to build up a planets fast?

You invade enemy worlds with transports.  They transport your troops.

(You can also use them in place of a colony ship to ferry population from a high population planet to a newly colonized one, as they can hold more people.)
