Normal games too easy, hard too hard

I find it far too easy to beat the AI on normal mode.

It should be called 'quite easy mode'

however, on 'hard' mode the AI suddenly becomes very aggressive and demands constant overwatch.

Not got a problem with that, but why is normal so easy and the next step up so much more of a progression?

I am not looking for flames from 10 year olds telling me how it is so easy to beat the AI on hard, I know, I have done this, all I am looking for is a game that is reasonably challenging after a bottle of wine. Normal is dull, hardis too much like hard work.

Any thoughts? (from those who have more than 10, even 20 years of age)?

Is 17 years enough?

I see the same kind of tendency - there is a significant leap in difficulty between Normal and Hard AIs.

unless they add 25 levels of difficulty on the AI it will be like this to provide anykind of a challange to expirienced players. That said, try starting over when you reach the next difficulty level --> don't start out playing a hugemap but a small one this should help you get the hang of it.

I've noticed that a normal AI won't build to many ships other then frigates, and doesn't build up on the worlds it aqquires. However, on hard, the AI builds massive fleets, and develops planets much faster then I do, as well as does a ton of reasearch.

I'm 36... (to set the baseline)

Normal is easy, but really hard isn't very hard either. Maybe a mix of normal/hard opponents might be about right for you?

Personally I'd like to see more levels of difficulty, but I'm splitting hairs saying that. If I'm not mindful on hard it can get out of hand I'm sure.

sorry my original post was probably OTT on the age thing

a mix of hard and normal is what I do sometimes, but as Nomad says, this can quickly go wrong if you stop paying attention ... which has been known to happen after several glasses of wine

I'm in exactly the same boat, however, I've found that you can fine tune the difficulty by putting the Shiraz away a bit faster or pretending to engage the Mrs in coversation...

tbh i think they should add a setting more thancurrently

beginer -50%

easy - 75%

normal - 100%

hard - 125% (this is a bit easier than now)

unfair - 150%(but let it rise 10% for each win and -10% when you loose- best if remembered on a map basis)

this will make the learning curve less steep but allow for unlimeted skill and sets are pretty fun goal in SP to see how high you can go ( AMG 9 AI's at 800% beat that mahahaha)

On single player, use the pause button liberally. It makes a massive differance. All of the sudden you are working at the same speed the AI can and it gives you time to strategically think about any decision, without putting the wine down

I totally agree with a caveat. Normal just spams light frigates etc. while Hard uses balanced mixed fleets and generally seems a tougher opponent. I'm personally still struggling to comfortably beat Hard, after many games at this level. In GalCiv the difficulty scale had much more steps and was way smoother - you could beat a new level after 1-2 more games or so. I suppose Sins developers wanted to test each level thoroughly for appropriate play and difficulty (in their mind), so they couldn't make that many - or maybe they all can beat Unfair CPUs easily so how would they have known

One way around the issue is noticing that the CPU not only has a level, but a type as well. Fortifier is said to be quite easy while Aggressor is much tougher. On Hard it seems to come right at you - the others will do their own thing for a bit more. You can play with the map, or CPU allies to feel comfortable... or try giving the CPU a 20s head start for extra challenge.
