Rally point question

Sorry guys: Noobie Question

Hi all,

Sorry if this question has been answered elsewhere.  I've tried searching for it on the forums but could not find it.  Here goes...

I don't know how to use rally points :(

I poured through the manual, and googled a bunch of sites; all they say is "rally points are useful!"  Alas, when I head into a shipyard, the "Rally point" button is there, but I cannot press it.  The ship/colony rally point governors show no choices as rally points either.  What's the deal??  I know I'm missing something incredibly simple, but I'm just too dumb to find it.  Sorry guys..

In order to use any of those options, you need to create some waypoints. On the main screen, there's a little arrow button in the lower left corner, just above the current research topic/time remaining display. Click on the arrow button, then click the map where you want the waypoint. It will give you a window where you can name the waypoint (default is the coordinates where it's located), and a choice of whether the ships form fleets or not when they arrive.

Definitely name them BTW - I love this game, but the default naming scheme for, well, anything but planets sucks - {G}.

I generally have One rally point permanently 'assigned' at every starbase so I can drop constructors to them for upgrades, one for every planet I have consistently running colony ships outward (Just change the rally point to your new planet as needed, and one going for any natural 'groupings' of manufacturing worlds that produce fleets.

They're also useful as map'notes' for strategic objectives you know you're going to want to grab later "Mine-inf-Carinoids", "Rest.-Thalan",
