Why won't this Dreadlord ship die?

Okay this is probably an old issue but I'm a new player.  Is there some kind of trick to killing the last Dreadlord ship?  Can it be killed?  Am I bugged?  What's going on here?

Okay so the Dreadlords spring up on my border and eventually start to wreak havoc, but between myself and my neighbors we've beaten them down to one last Dreadnought that stays at home and defends their homeworld.  It has zero defenses, 339 pts in mass drivers and it just WILL NOT go below 1 hit point!  I and my neighbors have sent waves upon waves of mixed firepower fleets at it and it JUST WON'T DIE!  It shows in the battle reports again and again that I've done the necessary damage.

Is this a bug?  Is this an intentional game mechanic making the Dreadlords indestructable?  Do I need some mysterious super-advanced technology?  And what's more, even if I got past that I imagine landing on the planet and conquering it will be next to impossible with 20 billion residents and a ridiculous Soldiering and Tech score.  They invaded one of my planets with 10...yes 10...troops and gave me a decent fight.

Are these guys supposed to be unstoppable or is there some great mystery that must be unlocked?  I've played for many, many hours in an immense galaxy and this pops up and is a serious pain in my ass as when they do have some offensive capaility, they send out ships to just go from one of my starbases to the next and completely trash them.

Rather unhappy.  Please advise.

Combat model changed in DA.

Important things to note are as follows:
All ships fire at least the first round in a combat now, even if they're destroyed in the first hit.
Each weapon on a ship fires once per round of combat.
Tie rule added; if both ships/fleets destroy each other after 50 (ship) or 300 (fleet) rounds of combat, the ship/fleet with the highest attack survives with 1 hp.

Given the above, your best bet would seem to be a fleet full of fighters-more than he has weapons.  As from your comments on IRC it would seem the DL ship has approximately 20 weapons mounted on it, you're looking at using tiny hulls, as small at 3 logistics each won't give you enough ships.

Alternatively, if you can build a huge hulled ship yourself with more attack (339?), it should/would win, and probably survive with only 1 hp.  It would only need approximately 14 black hole eruptors/nightmare torpedoes (DL/DA name vs. TA name), but I don't know what your tech level is.  Alternatively, 16 doom rays should get the job done.  This is assuming you have no military resources, however, so adjust that down if you do.

As a note, psyonic beam isn't sufficient for this task.  Mass drivers are irrelevant for our purposes because you stated in IRC that you were using beam and missile, but it would take 22 of them for our purposes.

Look here for more info.

As I have not yet bothered to complete the campaign in DA or TA, I can only offer suggestions rather than recommendations, based largely on the contents of the wiki.  I'll leave the latter to other posters who have experience with it, but please do give my included suggestions a try and report back.

Ah so that's it.  You can't destroy each other.  Gotcha.  Yeah I'm a long way off from being able to do what you described.  I'm glad it's not a bug.  I just need to set up a containment strategy until I can deal with them much later on.  Thanks for the explanation and the quick reply!

Then try 20+ tinies in a fleet.  Weapons don't matter, as long as they're present; you just need enough so they don't all pop in the first round.  25 would be a good number.  It requires that your logistics is nearly if not entirely maxed out, but that's much quicker to get done than maxing out your weapons, normally at least.  It also costs somewhat less, as you don't have to worry about putting the latest greatest weapon in them.

Or you could simply build ships with defenses which survive one shot.
