Modifications to ship designs?

Hello,

I recently started playing GalCiv2 and I'm still learning my way around the game.  I have a question.

Is it actually possible to upgrade or otherwise modify/edit a ship design that you have saved?  My definition of upgrade or edit is that you can make changes without starting over since starting over is what the "new ship" should do.

But when I select one of my existing designs and click upgrade, it seems to bring up an empty ship screen.  All of the installed items are gone and its basically a blank ship.

I should be able to load a previously made ship design, make edits to it (such as remove the engines and add a newer engine), and then save it as a new design.  I can understand why I can't edit designs of ships that have already been built without changing the name since that would create a problem of different ships that have the same design name, which shouldn't be possible.  But I should still be able to load it, make an edit, and save it with a different name.

Am I missing something?

Thanks

There is a checkbox in the options screen under Interface, down the bottom, it reads, "Remove Functional Components When Upgrading A Ship Design".

IIRC this is checked as default. You need to uncheck this box and then when you create a ship and save it as..."Colony Vessel" for example and want to tweak that ship, just select the ship in the shipyard editor click on upgrade and the ship will be there for you to modify with all previous engines, weapons, sensors...etc.

Just modify ans save under another name and your good to go.
